Whitman and Hughes had ways to declare pride for America. Whitman was more of a mainstream, white- American style of writer. Hughes was not very impressed with Walt Whitman's poem so he fired shots back at him. Hughes decided to show nationalism as well as pride for his ethnicity. Walt Whitman, as well as Langston Hughes had pride for america, but each in an altered sense.
