Walt Whitman’s poem Time to Come explores Whitman’s curiosity of what happens when people die. Rather than taking a pessimistic approach, his writing is more insightful about the experience. The title alone introduces an aspect of his purpose; to point out that dying is inevitable. With Whitman captures the reader’s attention and shares his curiosity with vivid images, sophisticated diction, and his use of metaphor and personification in Time to Come. The theme of Time to Come presents the mystery of life after death and calls attention to how vulnerable it’s victims are. Whitman begins his poem with the strong metaphor “ O, Death! a black and pierceless pall” (1). This bold statement allows the reader quickly realize that the work will somehow be connected to death, but in an insightful manner. The alliteration of “pierceless pall” emphasizes death’s ruthless approach. Whitman then describes death as a “mystery of fate” that " No eye may see, no mind may grasp” (3-4). Overall, dwell on this process of changing throughout the poem, it can be understood that the poet is demonstrating a particular attitude towards life. For example, Whitman’s “Crossing Brooklyn Ferry” discusses the experiences of one man and how despite “A hundred years hence, or ever so many hundred years hence, others will see them,” (3293). This very line suggests that time and death as a result of time passing cannot subdue the eternity of experiences. Whitman even goes as far as to say “It avails not, time nor place - distance avails not, I am with you, you men and women of a generation, or ever so many generations hence,” (3293). Emily Dickinson’s also manifests the theme of deaths limits. Dickinson writes: “Because I could not stop for Death - He kindly stopped for me,” (3368). These lines suggest that death itself waited (or rather had to wait) for a time when he could intervene this woman. Subsequently, this would mean that death must abide by time and therefore limited by time itself. “We slowly drove- He knew not haste” (3368), also provides support for this idea. This line of the poem infers that death is unaware of the concept of faster thus clearly through his unknowing is bounded or limited once again. Two of the most renowned poets in American literature are Dickinson and Whitman. Their styles are so hard to define yet so easy to understand. The all too familiar swift liquid that is Dickinson is a decent put side by side to Whitman’s hearty melancholy. That being the case, through combination one realizes that both Whitman and Dickinson share the common theme of death’s limits in their work. In Emily Dickinson’s “Because I Could Not Stop for Death,” she uses the structure of her poem and rhetoric as concrete representation of her abstract beliefs about death to comfort and encourage readers into accepting Death when He comes. The underlying theme that can be extracted from this poem is that death is just a new beginning. Dickinson deftly reassures her readers of this with innovative organization and management, life-like rhyme and rhythm, subtle but meaningful use of symbolism, and ironic metaphors.

Like the Tao Te Ching ideas are expressed in enigmatic verse and each stanza is a Zen koan waiting to be meditated on and puzzled out. Even Emerson called Whitman's poetry "a remarkable mixture of the Bhagvat Gita and the New York Herald" ("The Whitman Project"). Song of Myself contains multitudes of passages that express Hindu, Buddhist, and Taoist thought.
Each year, we all pass and celebrate the special day in which we were born and were given life. However, we also pass the day each year that we are going to die and with the essential difference being that we do not know the exact date to commemorate. Poets write about death because since there is no answer to what truly happens after death, they can write about practically anything and not be wrong. From reading and exposing ourselves to the topic of death in writing, we are able to gain knowledge of how other people perceive death, and compare it to our own opinions. While reading about death, you should come into it with an open mind because the possibilities about what you’re going to read is endless, and always will be.

In our lives, we go through stages of mindset and maturity that naturally coincide with aging. One thing that remains the same, though, through all of these stages, is that eventually, we die; we are completely aware of that as humans.
