Walt Disney changed the lives of billions of people around the world with his ability to make his dreams a reality. In 1923 with the establishment of the Walt Disney Company and eventually Walt Disney’s Parks and Resorts, Disney became the epitome of the American dream. So what makes the magic? What makes the happiness so contagious? The answer to that is the way Disney utilizes customer service. It is the source to the most magical and happiest place on earth. This project has allowed me to examine how Disney utilizes its customer service philosophies and techniques to achieve prosperity. With my family’s annual trips to Walt Disney World, every time it appears the same, nothing has changed, except for yourself. Disney make us feel as if time is infinite, that we did not and will not grow up. It is the stories that you listened to as a child, coming to life. It is a place where your imagination is limitless. It is a place that is eternally optimistic for the future as it portrays a world with endless possibilities. As you enter the park you are completely cut off from the outside world; all the chaos, and stress is gone with each explosion of a firework over Cinderella’s Castle. Disney does a thousand things 1% better making magic a reality, and happiness a necessity. Everything is meticulously planned and executed. Whenever we leave Walt Disney World, my brothers and I claim to have PDD or Post Disney Depression as time catches up and the real world sets in. Disney is an iconic brand that is recognized internationally. The company is not only loved by children, but by people of all ages, races, and backgrounds. What makes Disney such a beloved brand? Although it is nearly impossible to pinpoint just one reason for their success, Disney’s core values is what makes this company stand apart from the rest. The founder and creator of Disney, Walt Disney, had a vision for the future that integrated imagination, creativity, freedom of expression, and a touch of magic. With all these values melted into one company, the possibilities for success became a reality to the Disney family. When Disney began to expand, so did the company’s philosophies. Walt Disney created Disneyland on July 17, 1955, and from this date it was deemed, “The Happiest Place on Earth.” Nearly every child today knows what Disney is and what it represents: imagination. Not all children have the privilege to go to Disneyland, but with the different movies and TV shows now circulating the world, Disney has made an impression on our youth, in the best possible way. Disney represents our children's imagination, creativity, hope, dreams, and debatably the most important one: family bonding time. Walt Disney’s Snow White was one of the first movies to produce retail products, that were distributed before the film release in order to maximize profit, giving Walt Disney the appearance of creating the marketing strategy. One of the most prominent methods of advertising that Disney used, was advertisements directed towards the children alone. For example, when a child would watch Disney’s television show, they would become enveloped and fascinated by what they saw. This would lead to the children asking for their own “little piece of Disney” at home. Disney was able to perfect this method by understanding that in 1955, the majority of the adults were working hard and had no time to spend with their children. Many parents of the working force felt bad for not spending more time with their children which lead to an increase in spending money on their children. Advertisers believed that by “planting the seed” at a young age, the children would not only bring sales now, but as well as in the future. “They have come to believe what RayKroc and Walt Disney realized long ago — a person’s “brand loyalty” may begin as early as the age of two.” (Schlosser 42). The cartoonist’s career and company survived many eras of American history; this included the second World War, a harsh time where everyone seemed to be working and living for the war. During World War II, Disney contributed to the war effort through the creation of military insignias, aircraft nose art, and propaganda films. Throughout World War II, Walt Disney Productions created a total of approximately 1,200 military emblems.
Disney has been successful for so long because of its consistency on entertainment. Disney has always stood out for the ability to bring happiness to all people and its creativity to make different characters. With Disneyland being the foundation of hi image, Disney’s focus on quality of the overall experience shined through with a customer experience unlike any other. A perfect example of Disney’s attention to true quality is evident of their portrayal of all employees to any customers/guests. Disney refers to their employees as cast members, and as cast members they know to always stay in character because they’re giving the ultimate Disney experience. Due to Disney’s brand recognition and their consistent culture, Disney as a whole is associated with happiness and smiles. Disney was also able to combine industries by utilizing his abilities in the film industry and intertwining that with the Disney content within the theme parks. A Prime example of this is Snow White the movie, and Snow White the ride. These are two perfect compliments to one another that increase profitability and increase longevity and sustainability by catering to the wants of the people. There’s an old adage that says Disney World is really a human trap set by a mouse named Mickey. Of course, when you think about the millions of people from around the world who step foot onto a Disney property, you begin to wonder how one mouse has such an effect on people. For one, Disney has been around for years and some people go to celebrate different occasions, other people may go as a result of a friend telling them it’s worth the cost to go. Besides the people going to the famous parks and cruises for their own personal enjoyment, others go because of the appealing advertisement the company creates. In Disney Cruise Line’s commercial for the Disney Fantasy, you can see Disney attempting to persuade people to board their spellbounding cruise by showing various age groups in happy moods while enjoying the ship’s activities that have hidden Disney symbols and branding throughout.

As the founder of Walt Disney Studios, he was an artist who changed animation and film-making forever and has been delighting and inspiring audiences for nearly 100 years. And, of course, when he brought us Disneyland he created a place unlike any other, one that still thrills the imaginations of children and adults today.
From a small community area within the suburbs of Chicago to the hills of California, Walter Elias Disney’s journey through life is considered to be, at least by myself, an incredibly inspirational story. Walt Disney was the epitome of an innovator during the era that he was alive for. His determination and resiliency to follow his dreams were never stopped as he created one of the most successful corporations in the world today. His lasting legacy has shaped The Walt Disney Company’s business strategies for the present and ongoing future. In terms of revenue The Walt Disney Company, otherwise known as Disney, is currently considered the second largest media firm in the world, only to be behind Comcast (“Global 2000”). It is my goal to break down Walt Disney’s story towards becoming the influential leader that he will always be remembered as. After touching up on his background story, I want to walk you through the very beginnings of the Disney Company all the way to the end of Walt’s life. The story will begin where all he had was a small cartoon named Oswald the Lucky Rabbit and finish with Walt’s latest and greatest accomplishment, Mary Poppins. I will illustrate the difficult times and successful times throughout his almost 50 year reign within the media business. Notice how I only relate to Walt Disney’s life as a story; I do this because I firmly believe that his life was the greatest story of them all. He has brought so much joy to families with his revolutionary ideas and willingness to take risks because he wanted to share his imagination with the world. The story of Walt Disney’s life truly was a dream come true.
People of Disney are known to be the politest and most persuaded towards their customers. Disney has its own training university for training heir customer representatives and theme park employees. These universities teach the employees about Walt Disney’s cultures and values. In Walt Disney, a single customer is said to be a direct contributor to the bottom-line of the company as a single customer will later bring 10 more customers to Disney with a positive word of mouth. Thus Disney people are well trained, well-mannered and one of the best in the business.

Today, many of the methodologies that the “Different Kind of Company” employed live on in other brands. One of notable areas that Saturn excelled was customer service. Until the waning years of its existence, Saturn was a perennial top 10 leader in customer service ratings. For example, Saturn finished first in 2002 among a sea of luxury and near luxury automobiles largely due to the dealership experience, according to J.D. Power.

Ever since I was about six years old, I wanted in the worst way to go to Disneyland. I would hope every year that my parents would chose Disneyland as our next family vacation destination. I dreamt of the day I would come back from Disneyland with exciting tales of adventure and a pair of sparkly, ruby red and black Minnie Mouse ears of my very own that would be the envy of every kid in my elementary class. Once I finally went to Disneyland, it was amazing; Disneyland was everything I had expected and more. However, a couple years later when I returned to Disneyland, it was different. The rides, buildings, and everything in the park did not have the same allure. The magic I had experienced as a child was no longer there.
