A Walk Through the Park
I am about to describe to you a walk in the park. That being said a few details are required for you to fully picture the likes of what I am about to describe. The time of day is a little past noon and the wind is howling. The sky is a pastel blue, almost as if a wash of blue light was covering a white canvas. The sun is vibrant and concentrated. You can sense the gentle warmth of the sun on your skin and see the lively colors of the world all around you. Alert to the dancing light that surrounds you, your journey begins. Searching for your starting point you choose to begin walking down a gravel pathway that has a clearing of trees a few hundred feet away. To you this feels almost as if the sunlight is coming from beside, you as well as in front of you, and in part creating shadows in every direction. Once again, you observe that the leaves on the trees also contain shadows of the leaves surrounding them. You notice that the shadows do not create complete blackness, but that they are still in the tones of greens, browns, and greys. The color is just desaturated or more muted. Suddenly, you notice that the intensity of sunlight is highest at the top of the trees, in the middle you notice a more neutral color tone is formed and at the bottom the color of the tree becomes more muted and greyed out. To you this highlights how the sun and its light projects from high above the trees showing the relationship between the position of the light source and the effect it has on the surface it touches. You found this observation was similar to the grass noticing that you observed three distinct colors within the grass as well: green, light green and, yellow. Overall, you found that the park contained areas of concentrated light and dense shadow which created high contrast and layers of color
“Take Me Out to the Ball Game, but Which One?” by Tim Chabot is an essay that is very effective at comparing and contrasting basketball and baseball during the 1900s. Chabot’s thesis is very clear. He ends his introductory paragraph with the question of whether basketball should take the place of baseball and become the national sport.
The primary historical event affecting the story happens before Bryson's journey on the trail. The Great Depression was the economic downturn of the United States. It caused the majority of Americans to become destitute and eager to find work to support themselves and their families. The drive to open a personal business was crushed by the harshness of the Great Depression. The empty building Bill saw on his journey were all remnants of the failed business endeavors. The historical setting of A Walk in the Woods also falls under the period where more individuals were leaving their rural lives to find opportunity in the city. The farming regions visited by Bill have been abandoned and forgotten by the people who once lived there. Christopher Johnson McCandless was a hiker who also went by the name Alexander Supertramp and ventured into the Alaskan wilderness in April 1992 with a bit of food and equipment, hoping to live in isolation. Almost four months later, McCandless's body was found, weighing only 30kg. His story shocked many people and got the attention of magazine writer Jon Krakauer. At First he wrote a small article in the magazine Outside that sparked a lot of controversy with the readers. Since Krakauer got a lot of attention from his article, he decided to do more investigation on McCandless’s journey. Krakauer end up writing the book named Into the Wild and explains with plenty of detail McCandless’s life before his journey to the wilderness. Now a days, most teenager or young adult would never give up the life they have, because the way were so attach to electronics and our surroundings, for Chris McCandless is a different story he gave everything he had in life to go out and live a life in seclusion that caused him his death.
In a time where the general population is overweight and obsessed with technology, there isn’t much time for the outside world. A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson is about two corpulent men on a journey to walk the Appalachian Trail. At first their tale seems unlikely because of their weight and the fact that they have never hiked a day in their lives. However, it quickly turns into an inspiring story that we, as people, should use to spark our own adventure in the great unknown. Bryson writes A Walk in the Woods to encourage people to live a little and experience the great outdoors, to meet interesting people in it, and to encounter the enthralling wildlife that resides on the Appalachian Trail.
In the park written by Gwen Harwood, was originally written under a male pseudonym. The poem represents the idea of changing identity because of certain circumstances as well as challenging common ideas, paradigms and values & beliefs which is commonly held amongst mothers in today’s society.
All proverbs come with perspective, and perspective was defiantly the key to understanding this one. Traversing the walk of life, returning from depression and suicide; things are indeed their worst as they get better, a shining light and breaking free.
The homeless population in the United States does not only include the humans out on the streets, but also the ones in living in vehicles, emergency shelters, transitional housing, and other unstable environments. Over six-hundred thousand individuals are currently homeless in the U.S. In our current society, people often become homeless due to circumstances beyond their control. Humans often face abrupt personal and public challenges within their lives causing change and displacement in their housing status without notice nor a choice. In relation to personal reasons for homelessness, individuals who identify as LGBTQ and victims of domestic violence encounter many different situational problems leaving them displaced. Furthermore, there has been a sharp increase in unaffordable housing recently causing other people to suffer issues in a more public manner.
Stories are a big part of the human race. From conceptualizing the birth of our race to nagging our parents to tell bedtime stories, our life is nothing but a series of stories. It is in human nature to narrate significant incidents of our lives to others. Storytelling as a method has been progressively used by various companies as a tool to connect with their employees and customers. It helps to build a bridge of loyalty, longevity, mutual trust and understanding and connection. Storytelling helps to get that instant personal connect. Stories are significant because they are inherent to human experience. By stories we pass on our accumulated wisdom, beliefs and values to the future generations.
Could someone commit a crime or murder while sleeping? Could someone drive 14 miles from home without waking up or wrecking? How do you determine if someone was sleepwalking when only the victim and offender would know that answer and one of them is dead? On September 9th, 2017 at approximately 7 p.m., I went to Gracedale Public Park to carefully conduct my observation on the individuals, who were at the park and their specific activities in the one hour of time. When I got there, the weather was beautiful with soft winds, a clear sky and with some dim sunlight. The park was full of people of all ages. Though, there were more kids than adults and some teenagers. There were many bicycles and strollers parked beside the tree I sat under. After a couple of minutes, the park filled up with more and more individuals and everyone seemed busy doing their own actions.
Walkout; what is a Walkout? According to the website Dictionary.com, it defines the term walkout as “the act of leaving or being absent from a meeting, especially as an expression of protest”. Some people may say it is an act of retaliation, and others may say it is standing up for what you believe in. A walkout it is not only an act of leaving, it is a form of expression. People who are involved in a walkout bring attention or raise awareness for a certain issue that is taking place. That’s what happened in 1968. A group of East Los Angeles students walked out, in order to have their goals met by the L.A.U.S.D School District, which was, a better education for the Latino community.
Over the East River in New York City stands the Brooklyn Bridge, connecting the Brooklyn and Manhattan boroughs. From end to end, the bridge spans 6,016 feet and weighs a heavy 14,680 tons. Ever since construction on the Brooklyn Bridge was completed in 1883, the bridge has offered a safe route with scenic views to tens of thousands of tourists and commuters who have traveled it via train, car, pushcart, and bicycle. The history behind the Brooklyn Bridge is definitely intriguing as well as important because many fatalities occurred in the construction process, including one which occurred before construction on the bridge even started. When going for a walk, a person takes in the beauty around them. On this particular day, the refulgent sun is extra bright, making the sky a perfect blue. White, puffy clouds fill the sky, slowly moving at their own pace. The wind is peacefully calm, making the trees stand tall and proud. There is no humidity in the air.
There are various influences on everyone’s lives while growing up. I believe the greatest of these influences is the neighborhood you grew up in. I grew up in a quite large, welcoming neighborhood. While living in this neighborhood, I was outgoing and remarkably talkative. Making friends became second nature to me. Playing outdoors from sunrise to sundown playing sports or exploring the outdoors with my friends became a daily routine for me. I was outgoing, talkative, and active. I believe this is the result of the neighborhood I grew up in.
