Vivien Leigh Vivien Leigh is one of the most influential and successful actresses of our time due to her role in Gone With the Wind and her Academy Awards.
Early Life
Vivien Leigh was born Vivian Mary Hartley on November 5, 1913, in Darjeeling, India (Source 1). As a child she was educated at schools in England, France, Italy and Germany. Because of this she became fluent in both French and Italian (Source 1).Vivien attended school in London's Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in 1932 (Source 2). At the age of 19 she married her first husband, Herbert Leigh Holman (Source 2). Substituting the "a" in her first name with the less commonly used "e,"and used her husband's name to craft a more elegant stage name, Vivien Leigh (Source 1).In 1933, she gave birth to their daughter, Suzanne Holman (Source 3).

Vivien got a part in a British film called Things Are Looking Up in 1934 (Source 3). In 1935 she was signed to a contract by movie big shot, Alexander Korda. During the beginning of film glory she began an affair with Laurence Olivier (Source 2). She got small roles in several movies and then won her first stage role in 1935 for a production of The Green Sash (Source 3). Vivien played Anne Boleyn in Henry VIII and Jessica Morton in Bats in the Belfry (Source 3). She was even invited by the Danish government to play Ophelia to Laurence Olivier's Hamlet in 1937(Source 3).
