Although Vito “Don” Corleone appears to have a rigid personality, his character is more dynamic than it appears to be. He is “a character who [is presented] with more facets-- author portrays them in greater depth and in more generous detail” (K&G 96). Vito is introduced as a man of great power. The opening scene includes Bonasera pleading to the Don for help. Bonasera’s daughter was brutally beaten in America and the suspects were not punished in the court of law. He seeks out Don Corleone to serve justice by having the men murdered. Vito admits to being offended at the fact that Bonasera “didn 't even think to call [him] Godfather.” In desperate need, “Bonasera kisses [Don’s] hand” and is dismissed. His large body and unconditional affection for the Godfather make him the perfect man for the job. He has a savage mentality and a long history of maliciousness. Luca represents a “common or stereotypical character” (K&G 96). His size, barbarity, and absent-minded personality are all common characteristics of a character like his. He is a giant-like, threatening looking man who looks as if he could easily take down any threat to him or Vito without assistance. When Kay Adams spots Luca at the wedding, she questions Michael as to who he is. His bulky physique sits slouched in a chair and appears to be talking to himself. Michael responds that he helps his father and refers to him as “a very scary guy.” Michael continues to explain to Kay that his father once went to a band leader who wanted $10,000 to release Johnny. After returning to the leader with Luca Brasi, he signed a release for just $1000. His intimidating appearance is nothing less than expected from a character who portrays a bodyguard. Their muscle man look is representative of protection and safety. Brasi goes to tremendous lengths to ensure Vito’s safety. He acts at the command of Vito. He even sacrifices his own life in an attempt to find out information for Don Corleone. He asks Luca to go to the Tattaglia’s, tell them that he is unhappy with the Corleone family, and find out what he can about Sollozzo.
