Visit Report on the Queen Elizabeth Hospital
Introduction
For my visit on the applications of physics, I went to Queen Elizabethhospital
on the 10th of November 2004. The Queen Elizabeth hospital operates
the largest critical care unit in Europe, which is combining intensive
therapy with high dependency units. The hospital situated in Selly Oak
is a distance of one and a half miles from the SellyOakHospital
between them there are approximately 5900+ employees. Queen Elizabeth
Hospital is aimed, to the adult population mainly in the West Midlands
and offers a range of health services; bone marrow transplant,
chemotherapy, cancer, renal and trauma services etc.
The QueenElizabethHospital has been ranked at three stars in 2001-02
and treats over 650,000 patients each year.
The two aspects of physics which I investigated were:
* Gamma Camera
* Ultrasound
Applications of physics.
* Gamma camera
The first application of physics that I witnessed was the Gamma camera
in the nuclear medicine department. This basically involves the
patient being injected with a gamma emitting-isotope, this radioactive
substance then sends back images of the internals of the patient. The
half-life of the isotope is to suit the time of the diagnostic tests
and the convenience of the patient so there isn't a lot of radiation
they are exposed to.

* Ultrasound
Ultrasound was another application of physics which I saw in QueensElizabethHospital
. The use of ultrasound which I saw was the ultrasound scan. This is
mainly used for pregnant women to see if the foetus has any
abnormalities, or check on progress and growth. The rays in ultrasound
have a very high frequency which is above the human audible range.

Since the beginning of the propitious world, the core aspect that keeps it thriving is the propensity for people to discover innovations; however, progress of the past is, systematically, detrimental to the future. Not long after the revolutionary invention of the X-ray in the late 19th Century, an unprecedented number of medical examiners noticed (unknown to the time) radiation burns all over their body; decades later, an extraordinary surge in cancer cases had arisen. Perhaps, during the course of these years, scientists and researchers desired to further progress the x-ray (into the immense subsidiaries that are here today), and disregarded any flaws in the apparatus. This systematic inclination continues into the present time as Gary Marshall and Shane Keene notes in their 2007 article, “New technologies allow for patients to be overexposed routinely, and also allow for repeats to be taken quickly, making it easier for a technologist to multiply the patients dose without considering the implications” (5). The gaffes of radiology are present not only in the diagnostic setting, but also in the surgical and therapeutic areas. Working with radiation, it is imperative that the staff is aware of mistakes that are potentially fatal not only for patients, but themselves. It is especially important for medical radiologists to be cognizant of pediatric patients. Diagnostic medical sonography is a profession where sonographers direct high-frequency sound waves into a patient’s body through the use of specific equipment to diagnose or monitor a patient’s medical condition. As described by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, this examination is referred to as an ultrasound, sonogram, or echocardiogram. The high-frequency sound waves emitted from the handheld device, called a transducer, bounce back creating an echo and therefore produce an image that can be viewed on the sonographers computer screen. This image provides the sonographer and physician with an internal image of the patient’s body that will be used in the diagnosis. The most familiar use of ultrasound is used in monitoring pregnancies and is provided by obstetric and gynecologic sonographers, who also provide imaging of the female reproductive system. Other types of sonography include; abdominal sonography, breast sonography, musculoskeletal sonography, neurosonography and cardiovascular sonography. Due to the vast nature of uses in sonography, most professionals study one field that they choose to specialize in. Diagnostic medical sonography is a rapidly growing field because of the increase in medical advances. The area of Cleveland, Ohio has continued to rise in the medical field with great strides, providing better career prospects with the availability of numerous employment positions.

Since the discovery of x-rays in 1895, it has branched out into numerous modalities each independently specializing in their own ways. X rays are used to aid in the diagnosis and treatments of patients on a case by case scenario. Computed tomography (CT) and Radionuclide imaging (RNI) are both a form of diagnostic imaging. Since they have been first introduced in medical imaging they both suffered a huge development over the years in terms of image acquisition and also patient radiation protection. The following essay it is going to focus on just a few important things that make CT and RNI similar and different in the same time. However this subject can be discussed in much depth, the focus is going to be on the similarities and differences of the physics imaging methods and also a small awareness of biological effects and radiation protection.
Radiation has changed drastically over the past 118 years. Exposures are much quicker, digital imaging is a possibility in most hospitals, and most importantly, radiation protection. Many people have died, some without realizing that they were killing themselves, for the advancement of x-rays. Because of these advancements physicians are able to tell patients what is going on very quickly and without much delay. It is very important to remember the 3 cardinal rules: distance, time and shielding.
In general, ultrasound waves produced by an instrument called transducer are sent into a patient. Some of the waves are absorbed, but the other portion of these waves are reflected when tissue and organ boundaries are encountered. The echoes produced by the reflected waves are then picked up by the transducer and translated in a visible picture often referred to as ultrasound. In the paragraphs that follow, the physics of how the transducer functions, what the ultrasound waves do, and how the image is formed will be explained.
Preparing a patient for a nuclear medical procedure, a radioactive tracer material (or radioactive dye) is either injected or huffed through a mask. The camera monitors the dye and sees how it processes in your body, which the dye eventually collects in the part of the body which is to be scanned and because the tracer material gives off gamma rays, which are used as energy, the energy is then detected by the scanner. The devices work together to measure the amount of tracer active in your body to help produce special pictures to detail the structuring and functioning of your organs and inner body works (MassGeneral,2014).
Ultrasound Technicians are very valuable in the world of health care. Also known as Diagnostic Medical Sonographer, an Ultrasound Technician uses special machines and equipment that operates on sound waves to determine or diagnose medical problems for patients. There are specializations within this field in which some individuals explore. For instance, areas of specialization includes but not limited to; pregnancy, heart health, gynecology, and abdominal sonography. Although each specializing branch has its own distinctive function, they all involve probing the body to facilitate doctors with diagnoses.
...gh there are no known harmful side-effects associated with exposure to medical imaging it’s never a bad idea to follow certain safety procedures depending on the medical imaging nuclear phenomena that is used to image. Also most of the staff who have been trained and educated to proceed and conduct medical imaging are not only prepared to provide the service of imaging but they are also familiar with being able to maintain the equipment that they are using. By the staff being able to conduct this it shows how serious the goal of providing the public with the best service and solutions is in the mind of the professionals. Without a doubt medical imaging purpose is to improve the life of all types of people by showing and providing the solution at an early stage to the public in general without having to undergo delicate and life risking procedures such as a surgery.
