The Woodcutter and the Axe and I Escaped a Violent Gang has the same theme of honesty. In The Woodcutter and the Axe, he shows honesty by telling the truth of which Axe is his. In I Escaped a Violent Gang honesty is shown when she tells the truth about Paco’s murder case. While both share the same theme they are completely different moods. In I Escaped a Violent Gang there is more violence and it is a life or death situation. But in The Woodcutter and the Axe, it is a very happy place and there is no life or death situation. In the memoir, I Escaped a Violent Gang, the author shows us that change is ok if you are willing, to be honest. At the beginning of the article, she tells us about the gang and how to get in it. She also tells us about her family members in the gang. This is important because for people that don’t live in a gang area we need to know the danger and the brutal pain to get into the gang. In I Escaped a Violent Gang, there is violence and it isn’t a happy place. Also, it is a life or death situation in I Escaped a Violent Gang. They made a row of girls and boys that punched and kicked her as she walked through the line. She broke her arm and her leg doing that, which means she would do anything for the gang. Also, when she was five she saw her uncle get shot and killed by a rival gang member. Lastly, she states that after her uncle’s death he attended more funerals of loved ones in the gang. In contrast, in The Woodcutter and the Axe, everything is happy. For example, when he drops the axe into the lake and prays to the Goddess she appears.
