“Winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing” – a quote by Vince Lombardi. This relates because people in America were thinking this when the Vietnam War was going on. During the years of 1945 to 1970, Americans experienced both rebellion and dominance as a nation. For example, the United Nations was created to prevent future wars and conflict around the world. Americans also faced the fear of communism that began to take over in the United States. Some other events/people that affected this era were the assassinations of MLK and JFK, the Civil Rights movement, and the space race (“Prosperity…” 966-1253). Lombardi was considered the patron saint of the NFL, and his rise corresponded with the emergence of football as America’s dominant sport (“The Legacy of Lombardi” 3). Such a saint that forty-five years after he passed away, people still talk about him and how he had such a powerful impact on the game of football (4). He had a way of motivating and inspiring his players like no other “About Vince Lombardi” 2). Lombardi was known for his hard edged style and being clear cut on the field, meaning that he wasn’t the type to joke around (2). That’s why he was successful, he was the one to lead everyone around on and off the field. As a result of being so successful in his career, the NFL honored the greatest award a team could get, and that being the Lombardi Trophy (2). When he was a head coach, Lombardi hired the first black assistant coach to the NFL (“The Lombardi Legacy” 2). He didn’t care what color their skin was, he knew deep down that they could get the one thing done, and that was winning. He impacted Americans by giving them something fun to watch besides television.
