99 is not 100! Every single can of pop makes a huge difference whether we recycle it or not. Valter, who had spent 26 years collecting recycling materials, shows us the important role he played in the maintaining healthy environment for sea animals and for people of Brazil. Vik Muniz’s self-portrait project can be seen as part of community based art, bringing direct change in to people’s life, and raising awareness to the two most important issue of the time: poverty and recycling materials.

Introducing to the new lifestyle can affect them negatively. Once they see that life is more than just picking garbage, they will began to realize how they did the dirtiest job or reflect on life’s quality negatively, but at the same time they will no longer be pickers. It would be very upsetting for them if Muniz had choose to left them there. It would be like giving them hopes or dreams ,but then saying sorry we can not help you. I think they would prefer not to be introduced to the modern world, if they can’t be part of it because no likes to see their dreams being only dream and not reality.
Contemporary art is made in specific time.It is used to reflect on the issues that people are facing. The making of self-portraits is contemporary art since viewers are expected to reflect on issue of poverty, environment, and even social class. Muniz’s family being part of lower middle class inspire this project. Muniz's life experience shaped him in a way that makes his artwork more mature level. It shows that we must continue to fight against poverty. We have not given are 100 percent effort as valter emphasized by saying 99 is not 100. It means we had given our best effort,but we must continue to make it
