Over the past decade video games have caused controversy among scientists and other researchers as to what effects they produce. Some say that the negative effects of video games on the brain outweigh the positives. In some scenarios this may seem to be the case, but often times the studies they execute can be flawed. Therefore, the truth of the effects of video games on the brain may be truly uncovered when one more carefully examines the positive ones through scientific studies and behavioral patterns. While human knowledge of the brain is very little in comparison to how intricate the brain really is. Genuine and unbiased research can reveal more of the effects of video games on the brain. One of the functions that can be improved is vision and the way things are perceived through vision. To exhibit, patterns were more easily distinguished by people with more of a gaming background than those who weren’t, as proven by a sequence of tests (Washington Post). Even further, action games have been shown to better develop vision and recognizing different objects, despite the common idea that staring at a screen is detrimental to vision (Bavelier and Pouget). Along with all of this, Dr. Peter Gray says that, “visual contrast sensitivity (the ability to distinguish subtle differences in shades of gray)” is strengthened as more video games are played (“Cognitive Benefits”). Another key task video games can positively impact is the development of a better memory. In a study it is shown how memory is affected by holding data in the brain to later be used, while performing a different action (“Cognitive Benefits”). Also, there is a region of the brain called the hippocampus that can be better developed to improve memory through the playing of 3-Dimensional video games (Dockrill). Furthering into the development of the brain, video games can also help develop and boost cognitive skills. Enhancement of cognition was found because of the rapidness and randomness that video games produce (Lee). Some games are better than others though, some are even designed specifically for the purpose of improving cognitive ability (Lee).
