SAFETY TIPS • Wash hands between handling each animal and after handling drugs, even if gloves are worn • Change soiled clothes as soon as possible • Clean and tidy as you go • Eating and drinking should only be done in the designated areas • No smoking is allowed in the veterinary practice • Keep noise at a reasonable level – and NEVER shout at the patients • Members of the public should only be allowed in the reception area, waiting room, consulting rooms and toilet • No medications/drugs from the veterinary practice should be used for humans • Controlled drugs should be logged when coming into stock • Controlled drugs coming out of the cupboard MUST be logged in the correct register • Some day-to-day tasks may be hazardous during pregnancy …show more content…

Safety signs are broken into 4 categories by law. These are: 1. Warning Sign – A yellow triangle with a black border, gives warning of a risk of danger such as slippery or wet floors 2. Mandatory Sign – A blue circular sign with a white background, stated something that you must do such as wear gloves or protective clothing 3. Prohibition Sign – A white circular sign with a red border and a cross bar running from top left to bottom right, stated something that is prohibited such as smoking or entry 4. Safe Condition Sign – A white symbol on a green background, provides information about a safe condition such as where the first aid kit is or where it is safe drinking water HEALTH AND SAFETY LAWS/REGULATIONS There are a few laws and regulations that apply to veterinary practices, and it is very important that they are followed correctly. The HSE (Health and Safety Executive) is a government body responsible for enforcing health and safety at work legislation.
