VETERINARY MEDICINE AS A CAREER
Working with animals has been a dream of mine since childhood. I was raised next door to the town veterinarian, Dr. Murphy. He specialized in farm animals, which my family raised, so he visited our house on a regular basis. He knew I loved to hear stories about his patients and always entertained me, no matter how busy he was. When I was 10, Dr. Murphy gave me a copy of “All Creatures Great and Small” by James Herriot. The book told the story of a country veterinarian and his daily work. To this day, that book remains one of my favorites and always renews my interest in animals.
I recently spoke with Dr. Murphy, who is now retired, about his experience in the field of veterinary medicine. He told me, “Kid, its long hours and hard work. No matter how exhausted you are though, it’ll all pay off when you hear a newborn calf cry for the first time.” Dr. Murphy went on to reminisce about his years as a successful large animal veterinarian. What seems to be a simple tale of human error at first, Nathaniel Hawthorne’s short story “The Birthmark”, implies a much deeper and darker note upon closer inspection. A relatively short story, it details an event in the lives of Aylmer and Georgiana, a recent wedded couple. Georgiana possesses a birthmark on her cheek that repulses Aylmer more and more as time goes on. When he confronts her about it, she voices that it is a part of her charm, but Aylmer begins to react so violently around it that Georgiana finally agrees to give him a chance to remove it. He spends a few days in the laboratory with her and does remove the birthmark, but also removes her soul from the earth, she dies when the birthmark is gone. Veterinary technicians are like the techies of the theatre; the organization would be able to function without them, but it would be much harder. Things run a lot more smoothly with vet techs. There are multiple benefits that come with being a veterinary technician. These benefits include, but are not limited to, a high job outlook, great room for advancement, and only two years of schooling (depending on the route you take). Above all, the animals, who aren’t always able to help themselves, are being taken care of.
Locking a prisoner in a cell the size of a person’s bathroom, for 22 to 23 hours a day, without any human contact, violates every one of those values. The use of long-term solitary confinement is said to be form of torture, a form of cruel, inhumane, and degrading treatment prohibited by law. Solitary confinement is not only cruel, it tends to be counterproductive, and cause people to become angry, and raged with the system rather then think positively about their reintegration process. After the becoming publicly known the deaths of several imamates while in long-term solitary confinement, in Ontario prisons the Ontario Human Rights Commission has began to investigate several prisons across the province. According to Marie-France Lalonde, Ontario's corrections minister “We really want to see a clear legal framework that not only defines segregation but requires independent oversight of segregation decisions, includes caps for consecutive and aggregate periods of segregation and explicitly prohibits segregation for people with mental health disabilities, physical disabilities and pregnant women” (Porter, 2017, para. 16).

In the short passage, “The Birthmark” written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, a husband named Aylmer and his wife Georgiana dispute over a beauty mark displayed on the wife's left cheek. Aylmer tries convincing Georgiana how perfect she would look if she had the birthmark removed from her face, but the Georgiana feels that it makes her unique and perfect in her own way. After persuading her to take a potion that Aylmer created to remove the birthmark, Georgiana awakens birthmark free, but slowly dies. Hawthorne uses many different literary devices in his texts to help his readers get a better understanding of the story. For as long as I can remember, my childhood dream has always been wanting to become a veterinarian. While other kids were outside having fun at the playground, I was at the library reading books and learning about the different animals. However, as I matured, I realized that being a veterinarian isn’t just about caring for and assisting injured animals. Being a veterinarian means having the ability to make quick decisions in stressful situations, showing complete dedication and passion to this profession, and being able to effectively communicate to pet owners.
Therefore, in the bigger picture, the social construction of this widespread stigma, that criminals are not real people, has lead to the keepings of solitary confinement within the prison system. This then forces these prisoners within the American prison system to go through these psychiatric syndromes, suicidal thoughts, and overall, a more dangerous and a more unbearable life. Many may think it is not as bad as it seems, but the exact opposite. Solitary confinement can and will have extremely detrimental psychological and social effects on any human being, no matter who you are.
To become a vet the requirements are four years of undergraduate education with course requirements. The profession requires doctoral or professional degree you can get in vet schools. Training includes the extensive study of biomedical sciences, chemistry, pharmacy, and basic animal husbandry. Veterinarians need a well-developed powers of observation, good memory, logical thinking, patience, and positive attitude to animals. The key step is to start preparing ahead and always have a back-up plan.
Humanity has relied heavily on animals for millennia, for everything from food to transport, companionship and entertainment, and as such animal welfare is a topic that is hugely important to us as a society. My passion for the preservation of animal health coupled with my love of science has set me up perfectly for a career as a veterinary surgeon.
Putting prisoners in a bathroom-sized solitary-confinement cell for up to 23 hours a day without any meaningful human contact violates the rule of law and basic human dignity. It is unconstitutional, increases inmates' suffering and discriminates against offenders who are Indigenous or have mental-health issues (Sunny Dhillon,Solitary confinement violates charter right to life, liberty, security: lawyer, The Globe and Mail). Prisoners in solitary confinement have been seen to have demonstrated symptoms of anxiety, paranoia and claustrophobia. In some worse case they have demonstrated suicidal behaviours. Most prisoners who were put under such a punishment have tried to gain control over their surroundings by resorting to a self-destructive behavior (13 Most Valid Pros and Cons of Solitary Confinement, Connect Us). In fact, 1,594 of the 4,178 prisoners placed in segregation during a two-month period in Ontario reported mental health concerns. With overcrowding occuring frequently, most of these health concerns go unheard (Catherine Latimer, How We Created a Canadian Prison Crisis, The Star). Currently there are 100 dedicated professionals providing mental health support services to inmates at 23 provincial facilities and there are more officers being trained on how to deal with mental health issues in custody. However Monte Vieselmeyer, of the union representing correctional officer said “the training is badly inadequate, offering little guidance in how to deal with a mentally ill inmate in crisis.” (Evan Solomon, The Mental Health Crisis in Canadian Prisons, Macleans). The statement made by Vieselmeyer shows more need to be done because there are lives on stake, lives that could be saved if the officers surrounding the prisoners know what they are doing. In Nathaniel Hawthorne’s short story “The Birth-Mark”, Aylmer is plagued by the smallest mark on his wife’s cheek and eventually kills her in an attempt to remove it. I explored what happened after her death and instead of following Hawthorne’s ending where Aylmer is pleasantly surprised with the removal of Georgiana’s birthmark, I looked at what might happen if the birthmark stayed on her cheek.
