The career that I chose to look into is Veterinary Assistant. This career is in the Veterinary Medicine field. A veterinary assistant is simply the assistant to the head veterinarian. They are a step below the veterinary technician, and work along side both the veterinarians and the technicians as well. They provide the more basic treatments to the animals, normally under supervision of the veterinarian. They keep an eye on the animals being treated, to ensure that they are comfortable. They assist veterinarians by preparing animals to be examined and prep them for any medical procedures. To obtain this certificate, one would go through training where they learn the basics of animal healthcare, and how to treat/care for animals. Much of what one would learn would be to assist both the veterinary technician and the veterinarian. They all require at least a high school degree or its equivalent, and then there is on the job training as well. In this position there are a handful of skills that are useful to have, such as good communication skills, and be able to be compassionate with others. Because vet assistants are dealing with animals who are sick and in pain, they have the risk of being injured or contracting illnesses. The vet assistants need to be able to communicate with the pet owners in a caring way and be able to help counsel the owners. They could also continue their schooling if they wanted so they could become a technician, or even a veterinarian. There aren’t exactly many opportunities for advancement because the next step up requires a higher education, so without that education, it isn’t likely for much advancement. But if one wanted to advance, they could continue their schooling and get their degree to become a vet technician. Once they did that, they would have more responsibilities, and would be more hands on with the animals when it comes to surgeries. They help to perform more tests and administer medication. This position would be under the healthcare industry. While it does not have to be in a veterinary office, that is where it is commonly found. Vet assistants can also be found in animal shelters, pet stores, zoos, and research labs. Any veterinary office in this area, such as Kaukauna Veterinary Clinic; Country Side Vet; Cross Roads Veterinary Clinic etc. would have a position like this. Veterinary technicians are like the techies of the theatre; the organization would be able to function without them, but it would be much harder. Things run a lot more smoothly with vet techs. There are multiple benefits that come with being a veterinary technician. These benefits include, but are not limited to, a high job outlook, great room for advancement, and only two years of schooling (depending on the route you take). Above all, the animals, who aren’t always able to help themselves, are being taken care of.
Vet Tech has always been an option for me, helping animals is something that is very interesting. It was introduced in 1989, the AVMA officially adopted the name “Vet Tech.” In 1998, emergency vets debut on Animal Planet. And in 2008, student population grows from 500 to 700. There are about 17,000 people employed in the career field chosen. Some of the common trends of the job would be, working at Zoos, Aquariums, Boarding Kennels, and Wildlife sanctuaries. These jobs are usually found working in an animal clinic or hospitals and sometimes at farms because that is the “normal” areas for this occupation. In this career there are some general duties such as: Observe animals behavior and conditions, Provide nursing care, Bathe animals, Clip nails, groom animals hair, keep animals calm during exams or procedures. The more specific duties of the job would be to: take x-rays of animals and develop them, get utensils and prepare the animals for surgery, keep and record patient's history. Physician Assistant is a career choice that entails various specialties and flexibilities that attracts many. Those who desires a path to practice medicine as soon as possible, PA 's lateral mobility allows that to happen. Compared to medical school, PA school requires less time and amount less debt. As the population grows and chronic diseases spreads, The future projection of PA is growing faster than the average careers.
A vet tech can work in different work environments, such as animal hospitals, and private clinics. Working in various, environments create skillful tasks, which include: lab work, radiology, nursing care, surgery, x-rays, and assisting veterinarians in surgeries (Money Careers). Each of these tasks require their own abilities helping needy animals, for example: lab work deals with collecting samples of tissue, blood, and urine, nursing involves with taking care of the animals after the surgeries and checking on how their responding to the procedure (U.S. Bureau of Labor).
Equine veterinarians are animal doctors who provide medical care for horses. They examine, test and occasionally operate on or euthanize the animals. Travel to ranches and farms is often necessary, and equine vets have to work outdoors in various types of weather conditions. Being an equine veterinarian is a pleasant career choice because of great interactions with varied types of horses and their owners , the basic information, and the pros and cons of an equine veterinarian.
For as long as I can remember, my childhood dream has always been wanting to become a veterinarian. While other kids were outside having fun at the playground, I was at the library reading books and learning about the different animals. However, as I matured, I realized that being a veterinarian isn’t just about caring for and assisting injured animals. Being a veterinarian means having the ability to make quick decisions in stressful situations, showing complete dedication and passion to this profession, and being able to effectively communicate to pet owners.
In order to be a large animal veterinarian you must have to complete at least four years of college. You do not need a masters degree, only a bachelor’s degree.Your undergraduate education should mostly focus on the following: biology, zoology, physiology, anatomy,and microbiology. Colleges and universities, such as Colorado State University and the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Science are well known for their veterinary medicine programs. These school are just a few among many schools that have good programs in veterinary medicine.
For anyone to become a veterinarian, one must have all the necessary requirements for both education and on the job training. During high school, science courses are highly recommended. After high school, one must obtain their doctor of veterinary medicine degree. To achieve this goal, Ferguson’s Career Guidance Center says one must “attend 4 years at college of veterinary medicine, complete 45-90 hours of undergraduate study, and must pass at least one examination in the state at in which they intend to practice” (3-4 2014). During a person’s schooling, Veterinarians are expected to make decent grades and to show an interest for learning the sciences as well as technology. Some Vets say that it is important to start off with something small like veterinary assisting. This helps you on learning how to run your own business someday. Veterinary technologist do allot and this job is very popular. They do everything except surgeries, prescribe drugs and make official diagnoses. A veterinary technologist says “I always thought I wanted to go all the way and earn a DVM, but now I’m not sure. I love this career just as it is, and I need the break from school!” A veterinary assistant usually just takes orders from everyone else. In one way or another, I have been taking care of animals my entire life. Growing up, I was completely dedicated to animals, caring for what could be considered a mini zoo. Naturally, as a child, I was set on a career as a veterinarian. Like most children, I was naive about the veterinary profession, but I had plenty of people to warn me about its challenges. Albeit initially discouraged from becoming a veterinarian, my search for a meaningful career not only revived my spark for veterinary medicine but also gave me the maturity and experience necessary to succeed in it.
When she was little she could only dream of becoming a veterinarian. Now she is fulfilling her dreams as a Veterinary Technician. "Choose a job you love and you will never work a day in your life”(Henry Hernandez). Being a Veterinary Tech is really a lot of fun as long as you are passionate love with animals. One reason to become a Veterinary Tech is because they get to meet new animals and take care of them too. This career is very important because the well-being of animals is just as important as the well-being of humans(Vet Tech Guide). Animals need to be thought of humans just in a different shape. Loving, respecting, and comforting animals is just a small part in the career of a Veterinary Technician; being detail oriented, strong, and being educated are also very important qualities for a veterinary technician to have.
I believe as a veterinary technician I will be faced with many challenges and heartache on a daily basis. I will be introduced to situations that can be hard to bare--seeing animals that show the typical signs and symptoms of malnourishment and abuse. Having to unfortunately euthanize or observe euthanization of an animal due to a chronic illness or financial reasons by the caregiver(s)(“owner”). I will also vaccinate and administer medications to an animal under a veterinarian’s order and supervision. I will perform alongside the veterinarian with examinations and obtain bodily fluids such as blood, urine, or feces for further diagnosis. I will be present in observing and aiding an animal in need of medical assistance. I will fortunately be there to witness an animal walking on “all fours” along the path to their successful recovery. As a veterinary technician my purpose will be to allow the patient to feel and look healthy. I would love to see the caregivers’ faces change from concerned to relieved and thankful. I realize as a veterinary technician I will have to accept the good moments along with the bad.
Many people in the world today suffer with problems such as anxiety and depression. As a way to treat these problems, those people should use animal-assisted therapy. Animal-assisted therapy (also known as pet therapy) is used in many hospitals and is growing more every day.
