Making the change to a vegan diet for just one day, an average human would be saving one animals life, 45 pounds of grain, 1100 gallons of water and 30 square feet of forested land (Turnbull). Not only is being vegan better environmentally and ethically, this diet has many health benefits as well. For years, the standard way of living has been to rely on animal products to obtain adequate nutrients. For example, many people believe that milk is needed to grow and maintain strong bones or that eating meat is the only way to get enough protein. After converting to being vegan, a person should expect to go through some changes, some noticeable and some not, including but not limited to; reduced risk of illness/disease, weight loss, and a better state of mental health. First of all, what exactly is Veganism? Veganism is a lifestyle that seeks to avoid any usage of animals for reasons such as health benefits, ethical/moral reasons, environmental concerns and even social justice. To be vegan means that an individual must cut out any matter that comes from an animal including meat, dairy, fur, honey, eggs, and leather. The majority of people that turn vegan are first attracted to Veganism because they hear about the long term health benefits it may provide. Many people suffer from serious illnesses and diseases such as cancer and heart problems which unfortunately can lead to early death. Research has shown that adopting a plant based diet may be the key in avoiding such problems. This type of diet is proven to prevent illnesses and diseases, aid in losing weight and be better for the mind and soul. A balanced vegan diet is more than capable to provide a person with all required nutrients and vitamins needed for survival. In fact, humans will be able to survive longer on a vegan diet over the standard animal based diet. Over the past few centuries, the human life expectancy has been increasing. This is due to better sanitation, refrigeration, a deeper understanding in the medical field, and vaccines. However the one main issue holding us back is diseases and illnesses, (things such as heart problems and cancers). Science is struggling with finding cures to treat these illnesses, but it seems in terms of preventative measures researchers believe there are none. The meat and dairy industry acquires so much money that no one wants to bring to light there actually is a preventative measure- Veganism. It is time to take advantage of the research and resources provided for humans and make the change to Veganism to ensure a better
