In today’s society, people act more out of vanity rather than honesty. While there are some people who try to be honest with themselves while going through the motions of everyday life, vanity takes over, perhaps even unconventionally. While reading Act IV of James Miller's’ ‘The Crucible’, Hale mentions his perception of honesty versus vanity and it motivated me to further discuss the matter. An abundant amount of people would say they try to contain honesty, however, we are all liars, no matter how hard we try. Because of the pressure from society, we all are forced to make ourselves look and feel satisfactory with the rest of society. For instance, although many people think Caitlyn Jenner transitioned as a publicity stunt and for personal gain, her real motive was to be true to who she is and support people in the same situation. It is reasonable to say that she was being true to herself and supporting other people, however, at the same time, she accepted the offer of being on the cover of various magazines, including vanity fair. Ironically, the meaning of Vanity Fair is “a fair that goes on perpetually in the town of Vanity and symbolizes worldly ostentation...”. While being on those magazines covers spreads her story and allows other people to see and perhaps relate to it, she also gets paid for the copies sold. I replied to her post to let her know of their concert I attended last year. After sending the message I asked myself, “why did I tell her that?” Was it so she’d be jealous that she didn’t go and I did? Was it so I could talk to her about something we both like? Anyone would want to believe the latter, but I realized it was the first. I apologized afterwards letting her know I did not want to come off as boastful. We talked about the band for the rest of our conversation nonetheless. Nearly everything we do is in reflection of our vanity. When I walk to the Walgreens around the corner, I don’t go to get last minute groceries for survival, I go so that everyone driving nearby sees my cute outfit and knows I have style. When my stepmom gave that women money after hearing the message at church about helping those in need, she didn’t give it to the women so that the women would have food to eat; she did it so that my dad would be able to tell our pastor the good deed his wife did, and so that my step mom would feel empowered because she has something someone else didn’t have.
