Nursing is one of the most unique and sincere career paths. We play many roles and wear many hats. Nurses at times can be counselors, healers and advocates. There are many vital roles in my career that I value and hold precious. I believe in a strong foundation of values for nursing; which include Caring, honesty, integrity, accountability, respect, compassion and responsibility. On top of foundational values; strong set of essential skills of uttermost importance in my career. One of the most important value for me is Caring. I believe this to be essential. Through my career I developed these essential skills through the experience of caring for a multiple and diverse patient population with a variety of disease. The APRN must hold strong critical thinking skills, clinical knowledge and good clinical judgment in order to assess, diagnose and treat the patient. I also strongly believe in honesty, accountability, integrity and responsibility. These are all essential and a key to make a strong patient advocate. Honesty, accountability, integrity and responsibility will help set up rapport between provider and patients, by establishing trust. One of the most important skills for me is Intra personal communication skills. Listening, acknowledging and communications are essential in the healthcare role. The APRN must have a strong set of communication skills in order to be able to assess the patient and communicate treatment plans.In order to be prepared for an advanced role in nursing practice, these skills and values are essential. They are vital because to be a successful APRN one must care, be compassionate and be ready to advocate for the patient.
