Brutus’ and Antony’s speeches Shakespeare uses Ethos, Pathos and Logos in his play, Julius Caesar. I am going to analyze two parts of his play. Specifically, the two speeches held after Julius Caesar is stabbed to death, Brutus’ and Marc Antony’s speech, both are a speech for the people with hope, but the speeches have two different goals and reactions to them. During the two speeches they both use a lot of Ethos to try to make what they say more believable, but also to try and discredit someone, Antony says. ‘’The noble Brutus hath told you Caesar was ambitious: If it were so, it was a grievous fault, and grievously hath Caesar answered it. Here, under leave of Brutus and the rest – For Brutus is an honourable man; ’’ Here Antony uses Brutus says, ‘’Had you rather Caesar were living and die all slaves, than Caesar were dead, to live all free men?’’ basically saying that Caesar’s ambition would have led to all people being slaves while he would be a dictator, Antony rejects this by saying, ‘’I thrice presented him a kingly crown, which he did thrice refuse: was this ambition’’ basically saying that this ‘’ambition’’ of his, doesn’t really exist with him resisting the crown, and this ultimately helps Antony trying to win the speech. The final piece used to persuade the crowd is Pathos, Both Antony and Brutus use this to talk about Caesar’s death. Antony says. ‘’Come I speak in Caesar’s funeral. He was my friend, faithful and just to me: But Brutus says he was ambitious;’’ while Brutus says ‘’as Caesar loved me, I weep for him; as he was fortunate, I rejoice at it; as he was valiant, I honour him; but, as he was ambitious, I slew him. ‘’ With this they are both saying he is a good, but Brutus is also trying to say that even though he killed Caesar he loved him, but I was something that had to be
