In the Merriam-Webster dictionary, unwind is defined as, “to undo or be undone (after winding or being wound).” Neal Shusterman, author of this novel, writes about how the world is changed forever after a war between pro life and pro choice activists. A new law was created allowing parents to rid themselves of their rogue children by “unwinding” them, a procedure that is so under the radar, no man knows what really happens until they are unwound themselves. The fate of the “Unwounds” lie in the hands of three unlikely people, Connor, Lev, and Risa. Lev was born to die. He was a tithe which meant that his parents had eleven children, donating the last child as an Unwind. Towards the end of Shusterman’s novel, Lev was speaking with a close family …show more content…

CyFi’s mind led them to the Unwind’s house in which he found out the part of his mind in which controlled him was named Tyler. Tyler used CyFi to plead with his parents to not unwind him and when the parents didn’t respond Lev took matters into his own hands. Lev picks up a shovel and screams, “TELL HIM YOU WON’T UNWIND HIM, OR I SWEAR I'LL BASH YOUR WORTHLESS HEADS IN.” (Lev 192). Lev is filled with rage and with rage can come major destruction that can endanger anyone around him. Not only is he a runaway Unwind but he has bottled up so much with his parents not appreciating his life, Pastor Dan lying to him, Connor treating him poorly, and his constant battle with himself as his whole life will never be the same again. People became extremely afraid of Lev due to the fact he was so willing to inject explosives into his body and demolish anything and anyone around him. Clappers are often questioned as it is referenced in the book, (304), “Who can say what goes through the mind of a clapper in the moments before carrying out that evil deed? No doubt whatever those thoughts are, they are lies.” Other people who are not clappers, see their minds as dangerous and something to stay clear
