Recommended: The need for universal health care

Mahatma Gandhi once stated, “It is health that is real wealth and not pieces of gold and silver.” Our health is one of the most precious gifts, as we are given only one body. If there is not adequate coverage to keep our only body healthy, then we are not able to live our fullest lives. In order to live our most vivacious lives, then we all deserve to have adequate insurance coverage to keep our bodies in optimum condition. When someone goes to the emergency room for a cut that needs to be sewn up and they have insurance, then they simply produce an insurance card, may pay a copay of around fifty dollars and then receive the care that they need. The story is much different for someone who does not have adequate insurance coverage or no coverage …show more content…

Universal healthcare is the belief that all citizens should have high quality and easy access to healthcare (“Universal Healthcare”). Governments of countries with universal healthcare provide coverage to their citizens regardless of their ability to pay. The funding for universal healthcare comes from payroll taxes or income taxes (Amadeo). In addition to taxing, governments can mandate that people buy health insurance (Amadeo). On a basic level, universal healthcare requires some form of government involvement through legislation or government reform. Some of the universal health systems offer citizens additional coverage (“Universal Healthcare”). In addition, there are various ways to structure the universal healthcare system. Working for the common good is described as improving the lives of the greatest number of individuals. It works to fulfill basic human rights that, as our mandate as humans, we are obligated to help ensure. This is related to Maguire's Triangle of Justice. There are three portions to the triangle, and each of these contributes to universal healthcare. Models for individual justice include equality for all people. Jesus cured all sick people no matter their social status or political bearings. This type of selflessness is a practice that must be mimicked. Each person is called to care for the health of our neighbors. In addition, each person has the responsibility to care for their body, as well as aid in the care of other people’s bodies. Another model of the triangle includes social justice. This portion describes an individual’s debt to be paid by contributing to the common good. Pope Francis describes, “Help one another. This is what Jesus teaches. This is what I do. I do it with my heart.” Although there is much controversy about citizens paying for other people’s healthcare, there are a couple of things to remember. First, in this life, we are only given one body. This body is incredibly precious. There are no medical interventions that can recreate somebody’s body and therefore access to care is imperative.
