As I being an internal consultant and give advices to employee about ethical obligations in the corporate, my recommendation will specify ethical lenses as well as suitable with the fact that Luke provided. The ethical issue here is Luke had obligations with his company of keeping the project confidential before it goes public. However, Owen is his close brother and he would get financial damage on his property when Luke’s project announces. Luke is in the ethical dilemma of following company policy and his relative well-being. The core aspect of this rule is not about the actual consequence and result, but it’s focus about the decision and the choice has made based on the maxim, general way of acting. According to Kant: “Act only according to that maxim by which you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law”, which means one should act ethically and follows the maxim regardless of one’s own choice. If society, group of people think it’s an ethical action, and everyone follows it; then it becomes a universal rule to guide others. In this case, Luke can to put himself under his corporate’s view or his brother’s view. Under his brother’s view, Owen would disclose the information to Luke if he in the same situation as Luke. Everyone would do the same thing to his/her family. However, under Luke’s company view, expose confidential information may affect the company’s reputation to public. The company also expect its employee to be classified and follow company’s rules and policies. In this theory, the consequence doesn’t matter at all, the most important point is how Luke take his acting base on the principle that everyone has followed. If his action is adopted by most of people, and it becomes a universal law, then he is acting in an ethical manner, and vice versa.
