People who either enlist or commission into the United States Army are nothing more than cold blooded killers. These people deploy to foreign countries to kill not only the enemies of the United States, but to also kill anyone that they see whether they are against the United States or not. They deploy to foreign countries to take them over and oppress the people that live there. They are all drones and can do nothing more than pull a trigger. These thoughts and images are engrained in the publics minds because, the media only broadcasts these images on the news. Taking for example the aviation branch of the United States Army. Granted, the AH-64D Apache Gunship helicopter is used to engage hostile targets and provide air cover for US ground troops but, they are also used to provide support to foreign troops as well. The UH-60A/L/M Blackhawk helicopter is used for numerous types of missions. It’s designation of UH means it is a utility helicopter which can be used for numerous purposes. This helicopter can not only transport troops but also transport supplies like food, water, ammunition, letters from home, and equipment. This aircraft may also be used in the transport of casualties by providing a means for medical evacuation otherwise known as MEDEVAC. The support missions do not just stop with the aircraft themselves, it carries over to the large number of personnel that help maintain them. I can use myself as an example of this. I do not engage the enemy in any way, shape, or form. I am trained to maintain the avionics and electrical systems of both the UH-60A/L/M Blackhawk helicopter and the CH-47D/F Chinook helicopter. Normal human beings usually can’t even think about killing somebody. To not feel remorse after killing a fellow human being would be inhuman.
What makes the Army a subculture? The Army objective is to serve American citizens, to protect United States, protect vital national interests, and to achieve national military responsibilities (United States Army, n.d). The members of the U.S Army share the same objective, which makes them a subculture. Here some background information on the U.S Army. The United States military is consistent of five branches Army, Navy, Air force, Coast Guard, and Marines. Although, there is a lot of similarities between all five of the branches there is also a lot of differences. The United States Army was first known as the Continental Army. The Army was founded in 1775 by the Second Continental Congress in order to go war in the American Revolutionary War (United States Army, n.d). After the war, the Congress of the Confederation established the United States Army on June 3, 1784(United States Army, n.d). They are a land-based military branch. Therefore, the Army performs the majority of their tasks on land. It is the oldest and largest military branch in the United States.
Most people are willing to die for the ones they love. People often will die for their loved ones because they would rather have themselves die than the other person. I would die for my country if I had too. I probably wouldn’t go fight for my country unless they needed me because it’s not what I want to do in life. I think it would only be an illogical idea to serve your country if you knew that it was basically just suicide mission. Staff Sergeant (SSGT) Louis Moeller shaped me into the Recon Marine I wanted to be and the Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) that I am now. By embodying the Recon Creed and always setting the example, he made me want to be an NCO that my troops would look up to and want to follow. Even when not in charge he was constantly the one peers and junior Marines alike, turned to for guidance and inspiration. To this day, I still find myself asking “What would Louis do?” when confronted with a leadership dilemma.
When popular culture is associated with militarism it changes the way we regard war. Now for the Army, it becomes an obligation more than“willingness” while you have to be willing to do it as well. Those that are unable to be accountable are the ones that jeopardize the combat readiness of any unit. Basically it is the understanding that from the bottom up. Top down and laterally everyone is going to do and is willing to do the right thing even when no one else is looking. This is practiced at your home base where everyone is assigned tasks and details not only including your own job that you are expected to do and do right but hold others accountable as well as a system of “check yourself, then check your buddy.” Doing the job correctly and ensuring others do it as well and do it safely are all part of accountability in the military as one does not have to experience combat to understand that just being in the military is inherently dangerous given the types of equipment and weapons that are used to train and deploy with. As an example any live weapons range you go to part of the safety brief is “everyone here is a range safety” meaning anyone can call a cease fire if they observe dangerous behavior or a situation regardless of rank and it can be a Colonel or a brand new private, does not matter. As such in that event everyone becomes accountable not only for the operation of the range, the mission objective to have everyone qualify but do it in a safe
It glorifies soldiers as warriors not only because they are fighting the villains but are seen as heroes who defend the American values of freedom and democracy. As the United States has made these values the normative standards for itself and the rest of the world, the attitude of superiority has increased in the people, thus making it easier for the US to use the normative values as justification for military actions. The cooperation between media and government, which has unconditional support from American people by fostering a “peace through war” attitude, also help in strengthening a patriotic feeling in the society. This is probably the reason why people do not think about the numbers of others that the US military has killed as a negative issue. Respect to me is admiring someone for their abilities, qualities, or achievements. I think respect is always earned an can never be given. As soldiers soldiers we should always respect our peers because they have made the same sacrifice as us. But as soldiers we should have a higher level of respect for our NCOs because they have done their time an have earned it. Being respectful is not hard it is simple, just treat others the way we would like to be treated ourselves.
If this is not the case, most people have little to no concern for the happenings in our nation’s military. Webster’s dictionary defines the word profession as a type of job that requires special education, training, or skill. Many Soldiers would not consider the Army as a profession but a way of life. Some think the word profession belongs to everyday jobs like a plumber, mechanic, or doctor. Dr. Don M. Snider stated “the Army is a profession because of the expert work it produces, because the people in the Army develop themselves to be professionals, and because the Army certifies them as such” (Snider, D. M. 2008). In October 2010, the Secretary of the Army directed the Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) to lead an Army wide assessment of the state of the Army Profession. We have been at war as a Country for over a decade and the Army wanted to know how to shape the future of the Army as a profession and the effects the past decade had on our profession.
Lastly, we see that war as the crusade. When this being feeds to use from a young age, we learn how the enemy is. We also get this when there is a national tragedy like 9-11. The press then makes the public go on a crusade against the people that have caused this against us and we want to seek revenge.
The Uniform Code of Military justice (UCMJ) is a federal law, enacted by congress. It defines the military justice system and lists criminal offenses under military law (military). The president enacts rules by executive order known as Manual for Courts-Martial (MCM). The Manual for Court Martial details the rules and regulations for military court-martials and provides for maximum punishments for each military offense listed in the punitive articles of the UCMJ (Military). There is also a Non-Judicial Punishment, which consist of an article 15.
