Nausea and fear flooded my veins, churning my stomach into a bubbling pot of anxiety. Heat spread across my face surely turning it a bright noticeable shade of red. Thick wads of saliva ran down my throat. Sweat traced its way down the back of my neck. The smells of coffee and sandwiches overwhelmed my senses. My eyes darted around the table from one parent to the next. Bright white light illuminated the street outside the window making the three people around me look like nothing more than black shadows. Dad, who sat across from me, cleared his throat. He studied me with a sense of pride, he looked more like he was glowing, but his gaze shifted to my mom, my real mom, and that look got a little more hostile.

The woman sitting to my left that instant, the woman who is my biological mother, chose to speak up and say what we were all waiting to hear.

“Yes, well after a lot of prayer and conversations with Lisa and Papa, and some research; plus some reassurance from Joleen and your Dad. We have all come to an agreement. On April 13th, Union high school will be coming back from their spring break, and that will be your first day at Union.“ She said all of this with a sense of slyness, like she knew it would make me happy and she was waiting for me to acknowledge that it was “her” idea.

Joleen ,who sat to my right, beamed at me with the biggest smile on her face. Dad barely contained his excitement, but I was having a hard time believing what she had just said to be true.
