Uncle Tom’s Cabin is an abolitionist book written by Harriet Beecher Stowe in 19th century. Main aspect of the book was to show people how cruel slavery was. This book is important because it talks about race and religion, difference between northern and southern regions, humanity, public opinion, different types of discrimination, violence, fugitive slave act and of course slavery. It shows us how Eliza, George and Harry are separated. How George is warned to be “sold down the river”. It shows us uncle Tom who is torn apart from his family, Albert who is separated from his mother, because she was old, this episode also describes age discrimination, because she was old and Haley would have no profit if he bought her. 300,000 copies were sold only in North (ushistory.org) The poet, Langston Hughes even said this is “the most cussed and discussed book of its time” (gilderlehrman.org). There was enormous number of copies sold. This book showed people the cruel face of slavery. It showed terrible lives of slaves, broken and separated families, torturing, slaves “sold down the river” and some of them even put to death. This book was at first called “Life among the lowly”, this title really resembles to the summary of the book. Uncle Tom’s Cabin was quite controversial and revolutionary. It was abolitionist book, many people agreed with its morals and main idea, though many disagreed and opposed it. There were different opinions about the book. North and South had a disagreement. North was for slavery, but it refused the facts told in the book. It is said that this book was one of the causes of American civil war in 19th century, because it bought a fuss and opposition between North and South. Once when Abraham Lincoln met Harriet Beecher Stowe, he said: "So you're the little woman who wrote the book that made this great war” (ushistory.org). She was abolitionist and the way she wrote this book, her opinions and ideas really affected political situation and at some point abolished
