You see people scattered all over California with nowhere to go except the streets on a day to day basis. Many middle-class citizens living in the Bay Area today survive paycheck to paycheck. Many of them live in the Bay Area with no emergency expenses in their savings account, which may leave them short and unable to complete full bill payments. This can lead to middle-class families and hardworking citizens to get evicted out of their homes. A big proportion of their check goes solely to rent and unfortunately middle-class citizens are just one illness or an accident away from being homeless since they also have an expectancy to pay taxes and other bills such as water, electricity, car payments and personal expenses with one paycheck. A downside to all this is that many millennials are considering leaving that whole region because of the overprice in rent. Big Tech companies are to blame for the rise of unaffordable housing. They start building their companies in the heart of Silicon Valley and convince the nearby housing owners to rent their place at a high price than the normal people would thus drive out middle-class people towards the street. This means that California’s future tech industry may be missing an opportunity for advancement. Right now huge corporations may believe that this is a clever way to get a few extra bucks but in the next few years when employers and future employers leave it can affect these California-based businesses quite negatively. Businesses will take a huge hit if they do not try and accommodate youth in their structure now. A solution could possibly be for companies buying the housing to actually book apartments or houses in or out of the region for future employees. These businesses could also expand this idea all across America, by building new headquarters in other tech known areas to attract the right type of employees. If they make their industry tech based, housing offered to work in a company can attract many people . Having successful leaders and a good location can guarantee a reason for people to stay. This type of change needs to start now, this will ensure millennials who are not in the Silicon Valley area an opportunity to advance many corporations. At this time, there were wars being fought between settlers and Native Americans, and people were left with no shelter in both sides (Street News Service, 2010). Later, the industrial revolution caused more homelessness, industrial accidents left many former hard-working families with a dead provider, or with severe disabilities, and then the economy entered a recession in the same time period (Street News Service, 2010). Wars always left a large number of veterans homeless. Later, in 1927, there was an astronomical flood along the Mississippi River, across multiple state, leaving about 1.3 million people without a home (Street News Service, 2010). Natural disasters such as Hurricane Katrina, the 1906 earthquake in San Francisco, the Asian tsunami in 2004, and the earthquake early this year in Japan are still a major cause of homelessness.

Vaccaro in Unaffordable Housing: A Root Cause of Social Inequality, 80% to 120% of area median income—also struggle to find affordable rental units in all 50 states. This lack of “workforce housing” results in their inability to live in or near the places where they work. Not being able to live near work if results in higher cost of living because you end up having to pay for either a car or, you could rely on public transportation or even have to pay forward gas money to another person. There has been announced in the news that the number of the homeless people in many major cities in the United States has been increasing enormously. According to United States Interagency Council on Homelessness reported that there was an estimation of 83,170 individuals have experienced chronic homelessness on the streets of the United States’ streets and shelters on only a single night of January 2015, which is a small decrease of only 1% from the previous year (People Experiencing Chronic Homelessness, n.d.). In fiscal year 2006, the HUD, Department of Housing and Urban Development, was presented a budget by the Bush Administration consisting of $528.5 billion for homeless programs (Romeo 1). The problem of homelessness and extreme poverty is not a new occurrence; but in past years more extreme measures have been taken to combat the issue as more people become homeless. Expensive social programs and housing developments for the homeless have been created to help battle the increasing issue. Homelessness is an expensive problem that will never end; furthermore, the condition of homeless people in America is affected by the type of education they receive, the state of the economy, and the amount of funds that are available to house and feed them.
The Homeless in America I never imagined that I would be homeless. " Although I have read this statement over and over again, the facts behind it remain astonishing. The facts are that there are millions of homeless people in America today. Many of these people had no choice but to become homeless. Economic problems such as being laid off work, or the rise in the cost of housing, have led people to live on the streets.
Homelessness is a problem that happens in many different countries around the world. Definitions of homelessness are defined in different meanings by different people. However, the Stewart B. McKinney Act defines a homeless person as “ one who lacks a fixed permanent nighttime residence or whose nighttime residence is a temporary shelter, welfare hotel, or any public or private place not designed as sleeping accommodations for human beings” (McNamara 1025). It is impossible to find out exactly the number of homeless; however, the researchers can do a study to estimate that number. Based on different statistics from different researchers, the homeless population in America has been increasing as “an alarming rate” (Markos and Lima). Therefore, even though America is one of the most powerful countries in the world, homelessness, which has many common causes, has always been a big problem in society.
This housing affordability crisis is stripping away it’s diversity at increasing rates and I feel that not enough is being done to restore it. Liz Pfeffer article “Is the Bay Area in a Housing Bubble or a Crisis?” describes the situation as, “San Francisco’s chronic problem is a lack of housing for middle and lower-income people. It’s not that they can’t afford it, it’s that it doesn’t exist”. Officials should collaborate on creating solutions to the root causes and offer alternatives that would release some of the pressure. I would suggest promoting micro-homes or smaller scaled homes, limiting foreign investors’s purchases of single-family homes, or expanding campuses of employers to areas that are not heavily populated. It is not too late to restore the balance but it will take collaboration and team work. Have you ever noticed that while you’re driving around Austin that the homeless have become a common casualty to exhibit. I know the first thing that comes to mind is, “How ridiculous, why don’t they just get a job!”It perfectly acceptable to wonder, whether your money would go towards feeding a starving stomach or a drug addiction, therefore your generosity would be put to better use through a charity foundation or simply by offering a meal. The reality is that the majority of people who are homeless are unable to work due to certain disabilities. In other words, the best response is compassion. There is only so far we can do as a community, the major change has to come from a superior source, which is why I propose that the City of Austin ought to step up and diminish this problem. The City of Austin should build more affordable housing and assistance programs because it will help reduce homelessness.
As the United States economy grows and technology advances, many areas such as San Francisco, Silicon Valley, and New York City embrace tech companies with open arms. Homelessness is not something that was created over night; it has existed for a long time; often we choose not to see the homeless, or bother with them, so we look the other way. Homelessness is not prejudice toward race, creed, or religion--it has no boundaries; all homeless people should not be stereotyped as being drug abusers or the mentally ill that have been released from mental hospitals. Homelessness is not a disease that a person can catch from bodily contact, but it certainly has afflicted many Americans. We need to find the cause of homelessness before we can find a solution. More money for more programs is the typical response, but we should look at what has already been instituted and reevaluate them.
Gentrification is a highly important topic that has not only been occurring all over the United States, but especially closer than we may have thought. San Francisco is home to hundreds of thousands of people who have been a part of how amazing this city has become. San Francisco is one of the most visited places in the world with many of its famous landmarks, endless opportunities not only for daytime fun but also has an amazing nightlife that people cannot get enough of. People come for a great time and could not be done without the help of the people who have grown up to experience and love this city for what it truly is. There are an estimated 578,424 homeless people sleeping on the streets in America on any given night (State of Homelessness). It seems to be a distant problem since most of us are not homeless, have never been homeless, or will ever be homeless. Yet the cold reality is that for many middle and lower class families they are all one paycheck away from homelessness. While my family is an upper middle class family in Idaho, we wouldn’t be able to continue to live in our house, or maintain the lifestyle we are used to if my father lost his job. Even in America where most people believe democracy is practiced more than anywhere else, racism does exist and shed light on the discrepancy persist in the city of Yonkers. In accordance with Briggs (1999), African American and Hispanic families have been a victim of racially segregated and placed in the inner city areas. In addition to this, there have been instances of vigorous political resistance where sites were proposed for the housing project.
