Part 1: Background
In 1991, Ukraine gained independence from the Soviet Union. However since then, Ukraine has been suffering from instability due to an ethnic divide. In 2004, Ukraine went through the Orange Revolution after speculations of misconduct during the 2004 elections. Since the Orange Revolution, two other revolutions have made an impact in Ukraine: Euromaidan and the 2014 Ukraine Revolution. The country has been divided into two parts: the pro European and the pro Russia. Most people in the west believed that alliance with the European Union will benefit Ukraine, while people in the south side with the Russian Federation. During the mess, Putin has also seized Crimea in order to protect Russian Federation citizens. A cease fire has been issued by Ukraine, Germany, the Russian Federation and France to free prisoners of war. Even with the ceasefire in effect, rebels managed to destroy the Donetsk Airport, killing thirty people. A new ceasefire was issued on February 15 along side with the 12 Point Plan. Some notable issues addressed in the plan include: a buffer zone between Ukraine and the Russian Federation, local elections, humanitarian aid, among other actions. The Ukraine Crisis has left Ukraine in a terrible condition, over 6,000 people dead, more than 14,000 people injured, and almost a million people displaced. The new Ukrainian prime minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk has stated if the current ceasefire was to be disregarded, it can lead to a third world war.
