Tally Youngblood is the young female protagonist of Scott Westerfeld’s novel, Uglies. The setting takes place in a post-apocalyptic dystopian society. Whoever would be considered “normal” by our present day’s standards would be “ugly” by their standards. People live in their respective Ugly Cities or Pretty Cities. They are born “ugly”, but when they become a certain age a special surgery will be conducted to make them extremely pretty. When Shay spoke about the secret society, The Smoke, she mentioned a young teenage boy about their age who lived in The Smoke. David remains a mystery because he doesn’t appear until later in the novel. After some drama we learn about David, his parents, The Smoke, and the truth behind the surgery. David is portrayed as tough, serious, and independent. The reader catches a glimpse of the obscure reality and depth of the entire situation with The Smoke and the ugly and pretty towns. Despite his late appearance, he is a well-crafted character and is essential to the plot and ties the story together. Every section of the book served as a point and an allegory to the book. The story is easy to digest. Seriously, I read through this book really fast without realising it and with no hassle of understanding the ideas and concepts. Although, I have drawn similarities between this novel and The Hunger Games, but this book was published years prior. I’m hoping it’s only coincidental. I certainly enjoyed Scott Westerfeld’s Uglies, and undoubtedly is my favorite author of all time. I’ve read other books by Scott and they’ve kept me thinking perpetually of his weird little concepts.
