Over the years employees of Tyson Foods have been caught neglecting the company’s chickens. There is video evidence of workers beating and throwing the animals, along with a wide variety of pictures that show the conditions of Tyson Foods facilities. This company is responsible for supplying chicken to fast food restaurants Kentucky Fried Chicken, McDonald's, Burger King, Wendy’s, Taco Bell and many grocery stores. Farm animals used in the food industry are not covered under the Animal Welfare Act and chickens are not included in the Humane Slaughter Act. Therefore there are no laws protecting chickens that are used in meat production.

This organization titled Mercy for Animals recorded a video showing “thousands of severely sick and injured animals left to suffer without proper veterinary care or access to food and water”, and chickens that couldn’t hold up their own weight and often suffered heart attacks and organ failure (Tyson Chicken Factory Farm, 2015). The Animal Welfare Act, as the American Veterinary Medical Association (2016) defines, is “the federal law governing the care and use of laboratory animals in the United States”. It goes on to say that the American Welfare Act’s “regulations spell out requirements for veterinary care, food and water, protection from temperature extremes, shelter from outdoor elements, sanitation, and record keeping”. Chickens are also excluded from the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act. According to the USDA, this Act “requires the proper treatment and humane handling of all food animals slaughtered in United States Department of Agriculture inspected slaughter plants” (USDA). While the USDA states that this act covers all food animals, the Humane Slaughter Act specifically excludes all birds. The last federal law that protects animal rights is the Twenty Eight Hour Law and it has been interpreted by the USDA to not include birds. This law requires that animals that are being transported in "a rail carrier, express carrier, or common carrier" can not be confined for more than 28 hours without unloading the animals for feeding, water and rest if it is not accessible already (USDA).
