Dr. Melissa N. Nitta loves the art of dentistry and working with her hands. As the owner of Tropical Smiles Dental in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, she performs a variety of services, including root canals, tooth extractions and dental cleanings. She enjoys creating beautiful teeth, but says the best part of her job is interacting with patients.
Dr. Nitta received her dental license from the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry in San Francisco, in 1998. She worked as an associate in California for five years before moving to Hawaii with her husband, an island native, in 2003. She opened Tropical Smiles Dental in 2007.

In middle school, I realized the importance of my appearance and how much confidence a beautiful smile can bring. Prior to receiving braces, I looked like a snaggle-tooth vampire and could not wait to get my smile fixed. I was captivated by my orthodontist, Dr. Sawaf, unscrambling the jigsaw puzzle in my mouth to match the complete picture in his mind. After three years of being Dr. Sawaf’s patient, it was clear he cared about more than my teeth. He made me feel like a friend as he joyfully answered all my questions and addressed my anxieties. This increased my interest in dentistry.
