The documentary “Tricked” observes and studies all factors of the social problem, the human sex trafficking trade in America. Human sex trafficking is modern slavery with over 20.9 million people currently enslaved around the world. To put the magnitude of this number into perspective, it is greater than the population of five major United States cities, combined. Throughout the documentary we hear from people on all sides of this crime. From the pimps’ perspective, selling girls’ bodies is their career, their source of income and is a way of life. Pimps gain the trust of young girls then manipulate and exploit that trust, using their bodies to make a profit. Along with being in danger of physical violence, prostitution is an illegal career. Rarely are the pimps incrassated for their illegal activities, but it is common for the girls to be arrested numerous times. In this documentary Danielle, a former sex slave, shared how she had been arrested over fifty times while her pimp had never been arrested. While telling of her experiences with the law enforcement she mentioned that they never asked her how she is doing, or if she needed/wanted help or if she wanted to be put into a program. This demonstrates how the victims of human sex trafficking are not viewed as victims. Most of the Johns do not think they are doing any wrong by paying young women to have sex with them. In fact, a John in the film named Hugh went on to say “I pay for sex because I am being human.” Most of these women did not choose this life, they are often picked up by pimps when they are as young as twelve years old. If lucky enough to get out, survivors are often left with PTSD and constant paranoia that their former pimp in looming around the corner waiting to pick them back
