Almost all young men hit a point in life where his mindset transitions from the imagined indestructability to the comprehension of humanity. Many see it as a steady change with no definite stage of illumination, nonetheless a sequences of open-minded phases or “the stepping stones into maturity.” For a select few, there is an insight, bounded by a catastrophic occurrence that incites a renovation in one’s outlook on something. We were nineteen. We were bad" (306). It was almost as if Mr. Boyle wanted the reader to think the boys were full of themselves; and to think that the boys were trying to act older than what their mindset holds. For the boys, the penalties of the evening divulge into realization, respectively adding to each problem. The appearance of the tire iron symbolizes a crucial idea in the scheme of the short story. The boys erroneously ponder that the blow to Bobby’s cranium has murdered him. The boys are capable to realize the probability of homicide; then are quickly confronted by Bobby’s girl, who surfaces from the automobile blaring. The malevolent individuals try to rape her, however are broken up by an additional automobile pulling into the lot.
