A transculturation is used to describe the phenomenon of merging and converging cultures. Transculturation is a term to describe the process from transitioning from one culture to another culture. The Cuban anthropologist Fernando Ortiz describe transculturation in five phases, enslavement, compromise, adjustment, self-assertion and integration. Transculturation is very common today. Anthropologist still use the term transculturation because overtime culture has changed a lot for an example, back then the cultures were much more isolated due to less population and more available land, also, they were less technology and transportation. But in the American culture people don’t wear as much clothing as our culture does. Our culture and the American culture both have to compromise and accept each other as it is part of the diverse American.
In Pakistani culture, people usually live in the same house for generations. This means that we have neighbors that stay at the same house for generations as well. Because of this we become very close and attached with our neighbors. We take care and help our neighbors like family. But in America, people are constantly moving and although we know our neighbors we don’t have the same connection and don’t get a chance to be as close. Unfortunately, we cannot stop people from moving and must compromise, accept and appreciate the opportunity to meet new families. We speak Arabic or Urdu but in America everything is in English. My parents knew English and taught us right from the birth. It was an advantage for us to know how to speak but when we were in Pakistan many Pakistani couldn’t speak English. English is an international language but I have recently been to turkey and it was very hard to get around and communicate with anyone because the languages we spoke were completely different.
