An Evaluation Essay on TOMS Shoes (Final Draft)
There are two important factors that people consider when they want to buy shoes, design and quality. However, there are two more factors that TOMS shoes consumers keep in mind, caring for nature and being benevolent. TOMS is an American brand of shoes, eyeglasses, and accessories that was founded in 2006 in Playa Del Ray, California. The founder of TOMS is Blake Mycoskie, a tech entrepreneur from Texas. The price of a pair of TOMS shoes is not high. For example, a pair of classic shoes is around $55; therefore, from my point of view, considering the amount of money that someone spends on TOMS shoes, he or she can enjoy a high-quality product.
Eco-friendly Materials
TOMS is committed to applying eco-friendly materials in its products when possible, and they call this program “Vegan.” For instance, it uses post-consumer waste—materials that have been used and diverted or recovered—to decrease the waste in our habitat. Also, TOMS produces its shoes’ boxes with post-consumer waste and prints them with soy inks, which are made from soybeans.
However, TOMS applies ethylene vinyl acetate, EVA, in its shoes’ bases. It is important to mention that exposure to EVA could result in health problems such as irritation of the eyes, nose, throat, and lungs. Also, it can affect the immune and nervous system (“Department of Health and Human Services”).
