On the market today there are over 7,000 different types of tomatoes. Tomatoes are very popular. Tomatoes are a glossy red or occasionally yellow, purple edible fruit, which is eaten as a vegetable or in a salad. The argument has been up for discussion if a tomato is a fruit or vegetable. Scientifically speaking a tomato is a fruit. Fruits develop from the ovary in the base of the flower and contain the seeds of the plant. But some may say that a tomato is a vegetable because they are used in savory rather than sweet when cooking.
Tomato plants are vines and they have two basic ways of growing, determinate and indeterminate. The vines of determinate grow only 1 to 3 feet long and the main stem and side stems produce three flower clusters each. Once the flower has form at the vine tips the plant stops growing. Determinate fruit types set over a two-week period then stop this is perfect choice for canning. Indeterminate tomatoes have sprawling vines that grow to about 6 to 20 feet long; these tomatoes produce about three flower clusters at every second leaf. These tomatoes keep growing and producing unless stopped by frost, disease or lack of nutrients. Which means you can keep picking fresh tomatoes during the whole season.
Planting a tomato. Nurseries and garden centers offer a wide range of dependable and disease-resistant varieties such as jet star, celebrity, green zebra and many others to just name a few. If you want to take full advantage of planting a tomato you should start from the seed. Planting a tomato should be in a sunny spot indoors facing a window that provides warmth.
