The story about Tom Walker and his wife is confusing. People asked if they’re evenly matched or in a good relationship, but I think they’re not even in a relationship. If they hated each other the whole time, then why did Tom marry her in the first place? Tom is described as stiff, but his wife would abuse him physically, hide food from him, and is described as ”Fierce of temper, Loud of the tongue, or Strong of Arm”. At the beginning, Tom is very self-centered and preoccupied with his work. He finds what he wants to do more important than what his wife wants to do that night. Once faced with the reality of death, he realizes how important his wife is to him. This forces him to be strong and stay alive, for her sake. The only reason he made it back into his house was because of how much he cared for her. Tom then decides to go find her at the movies, which shows that he has become less self-centered and more aware of his wife’s feelings.
But he is not in any way greatful for any of it. Despite everything Tom has he still belittles others, and cheats on Daisy. Tom and Daisy Buchanan, millionaires from East Egg, seem to be having marriage problems. As stated by a witness, Tom had been getting mysterious phone calls every day. Tom has also gone out of town multiple times for many excused reasons. Some even say it is possible Tom may be having an affair with another woman. We interviewed a close friend of the married couple on her thoughts and she said “Tom definitely has another woman in Chicago, no doubt.” Another friend of theirs, Nick, claims that he was at their house for a meal when Tom had gotten a phone call. Daisy's husband, Tom shows his ridiculous morality in different ways. One way is his search for power, which is shown most through his affair with Myrtle and his possessiveness. He evidently feels further domination and masculinity when he has her, a woman of lower class, as his mistress. Secondly, Tom Buchanan is shallow enough to think that everything and everyone he has in his life are part of his property. This increases his 'power' and makes him feel as if he is truly successful. This couple, Tom and Daisy certainly contain serious corruptness due to their shallowness and self-indulgence.

Tom Wingfield is a determined young man. He has decided against everyone else in his family's wishes that he wants to leave the dismal life of a factory job, to pursue a chance in the Merchant Marines. He realizes that he would be running off like his father and this is probably the only thing that kept him from leaving this long. Amanda, Tom's mother, deep down knows the day is coming that Tom will leave. She says "But not till there's someone to take your place." She wants Laura, if not herself to be taken care of. At that moment in the play Tom is the breadwinner in the family and up to this point Tom is the underpriviledged child that wants to move on. He wants to pursue his dream, a more adventurous life. Tom was a likable character until we find out he didn't pay the electric bill with the intended money. When Jim is over and he says "I paid my dues this month, instead of the light bill". At this point, Tom becomes a more selfish character. There is less sympathy given in his direction. In fact, this is probably where we feel a little more sorry for Amanda.
Myrtle is unhappy in her life with her husband George and desires more, especially more money. Tom’s actions caused Myrtle to create the delusion that he would soon be leaving Daisy to be with her, further claiming that it is Daisy keeping them apart because “‘She’s a Catholic, and they don’t believe in divorce’” (Fitzgerald 33). Although, Nick, Daisy’s cousin, said, “Daisy was not a Catholic” and expressed his shock “at the elaborateness of the lie” (Fitzgerald 33). Tom was never planning to leave Daisy to be with Myrtle, he only planned to use her to cheat on his wife, yet Myrtle becomes so attached to this lie it becomes her life. Tom’s true intentions are revealed when he buys Myrtle a dog. She is “enthusiastic” about the idea expressing how she thinks “it’s cute” (Fitzgerald 28). By buying her the dog she wants, Myrtle believes Tom is spoiling her, since he bought her a dog on a whim, because she thought it was cute. Tom, on the other hand, does not think it is a big deal to spend ten dollars on a dog since he has an abundance of wealth at his disposal. All the while, he is fully aware of the scam the man is pulling recognizing, “It’s a bitch”, not a boy like the man claimed (Fitzgerald 28). Furthermore, Tom understands that his money will be used to “buy ten more dogs”, through his tone looking down on the
In the Devil and Tom Walker Tom’s wife has a temper, loud mouth and she was strong . His face sometimes showed signs that their fighting may have been more than words. She would hide things from Tom. They did not have a very good marriage. Again Irving portrayed the wife as loud and nagging.
Tom's acts in love are childish and immature. At first, Tom's love for Becky Thatcher is just a crush. He tells Becky about his "marriage" to Amy and it starts a fight. After that, they both play a game of "hard to get". After this, Tom is too proud to apologize. Also, Tom makes good decisions. First, when Becky accidentally rips Mr. Dobbins' book a, Tom takes the blame, and this ends their feud. Another mature event takes place in McDougal's cave. When Tom and Becky are in the cave, they become lost. Then Tom takes responsibility for himself and Becky's life. These events are part of becoming a young man.
Tom Buchanan is described as having a strong and repugnant presence. He was a star athlete at Yale and is restless after his glory days of playing there, “…had been one of the most powerful ends that ever played football at New Haven-a national figure in a way, one of those men who reach such an acute limited excellence at twenty-one that everything afterwards savours of anti-climax” (page 10). He is arrogant and seems to believe that he can have anything that he wants. Even though he has a wife and child, he has no problem with having a mistress on the side and does not care that others, including his wife, know about it. In addition, Tom is very self-absorbed and cares only about himself and his own desires. Tom was what Daisy’s family considered to be suitable for their daughter. That, along with his money, is mainly why she married him.
Williams sees abandonment, if preformed without reason, as an egregious thing. Tom, being tired of the pressure from his family, decided to leave them and go on his own. On the contrary, his father left because, as an itinerant man, he “fell in love with long distances.” This is his reason for abandoning his wife and two children; he left them alone with nothing. This shows his weak character. Also, Amanda, the mother, always brings up the fathers dirty ways and dark past. “And you – when I see you taking after his ways! Staying out late – and – well, you had been drinking…”(Scene IV). Additionally, Amanda is constantly pushing Tom to fill in his father’s shoes and take care of her and Laura like his father never did.: “But until that time you've got to look out for your sister. I don't say me because I'm old and don't matter. I say for your sister because she's young and dependent.” (Scene IV). Additionally, she urges Tom to maintain and try to keep his job even though he does not like it: “What right have you got to jeopardize your job? Jeopardize the security of us all?” (Scene III). Amanda knows he is not happy but she also knows that his job is what puts food on the table and a roof over their heads, so she encourages him to try and
