Everyone who plays or played a sport knows how outstanding it feels to win the first place and earn that femonomanal trophy. It used to be something that only the best can admire, but what about now a days? More and more athletes are starting to get trophies just for participating. To help kids succeed more in life we need to lower the number of trophies.
First off, Almost every parent can see that giving their child a trophy builds their confidence and self esteem. What most don't realize it how this free trophy giving will hurt them later on in life. In a new york times paper Ashley Merryman states some research found by Carol Dweck(a psychology professor at stanford university)which says “..they enjoying hearing that they are talented, smart and so on. But after such praise of their innate abilities, they collapse at the first experience of difficulty. Demoralized by their failure, they say they'd rather cheat than risk failing again.” Yes kids loving getting trophies but at what cost. Not only on the field but in the classroom. With giving everyone a trophy you leave out a big factor of life that pushes people and that's competing. Kelly wallace quoted Nfl super bowl champ Kurt warner who said “They don't let kids pass classes for just showing up.” if anyone knows something about competing it's a former super bowl champ and Kurt says a lot in this simple sentence. Through life nothing is just given to you. You have to compete with everyone around you all the time. All the way from school to your job it's a competition. Participation trophies don't teach kids about competing. If everyone gets a trophy then it teaches that there isn't really any motivation to be better than the other guy because y'all get the same reward.
