Harper Lee wrote an amazing novel called, To Kill a Mockingbird, it takes place in Maycomb, Alabama during the great depression. The mockingbird is a symbol of innocence throughout the entire novel. In her novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee uses Jem, Tom, and Boo as mockingbirds. First, Harper Lee uses Jem as a mockingbird. Jem is a 13 year old white boy, with a sister named Scout and a father named Atticus. Jem and Scout were walking home from a pageant at their school, but on their way home they were attacked by a man named Bob Ewell. When Bob attacked them Bob broke Jem's arm. They were attacked by Bob because Atticus was protecting a black man named Tom and Atticus almost got him caught for having sex with his daughter Mayella. Harper Lee explains,” That Scout felt Jem’s hand leave her’s, how she felt him jerk backwards to the ground. Also how she heard more scuffling, and then heard a dull crunch and Jem’s screams. (351) It show’s he is a mockingbird because he was trying to get his little sister away. Tom is a young black man, how was committed of a crime he didn’t do. Tom was committed of rapeing a young white girl named Mayella Ewell. Will Tom was on trial he was going to be attacked by the KKK but Jem, Dill, and Scout stopped them. Later on Tom was found guilty for rapeing Mayella. A couple weeks later Tom was at the prison and he gets killed, he was shot 17 times by the the guards. He was shot during his exercise period for supposably trying to run. Atticus explains,” That Tom is dead, they shot him 17 times because he was trying to run during his exercise period.” (315) It proves that he was killed for being black, which also means he was arrested because he’s black,also he was arrested for being found guilty for raping Mayella.
