Courage is knowing it’s going to be a challenge and facing it with confidence and bravery. In the novel To Kill a Mocking Bird three characters, Atticus, Mrs. Dubose, and Arthur “Boo” Radley showed many types of courage. Some convey courage and they don’t even notice it. Courage, a major theme in Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mocking Bird, is demonstrated by various characters throughout the novel. One character that demonstrates courage is Jem and Scout’s father, Atticus. Atticus is a lawyer in a small town, called Maycomb County. He has to take care of his children, Jem and Scout, on his own because his wife passed away when they were young. Atticus defined courage as, “When you know you are licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what” (Lee 112). Boo shows courage many times in the book and shows that he is a brave person. Jem, Scout, and Dill thought he was just this horrible person from all the rumors in town, but they ball had the wrong idea about Boo Radley. Boo was brave enough to come outside after being shut up all his life to bring Scout a blanket when Ms. Maudie’s house caught on fire. Jem told Scout, “Boo Radley. You were so busy looking at the fire you didn’t know it when he put the blanket around you,” (Lee72). They didn’t even realize that he was the one who brought them the blanket. Boo was very brave to have come out after so many years just to puta blanket around Scout. In To Kill a Mocking Bird, heroism is a huge theme and it is very evident of the actions that the following characters portray.
