Tipping Point Research Paper

Since 4G cellular networks were released in 2010, they have gained over 1.2 billion users worldwide (Statista). The use of 4G networks grew very fast, and now 5G networks are on the horizon. There are several reasons why cellular networks are so popular now. The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell discusses the conditions under which epidemics and trends tip. He narrows it down to his three main laws, the law of the few, stickiness factor, and power of context. If an idea doesn’t meet the criteria of these laws, than it is not going to become a trend. By using Gladwell’s laws of epidemics, one can understand why 5G is going to reach its tipping point.

Gladwell argues that how appealing and memorable something is to people determines if an idea will spread (Gladwell). 5G has lots of benefits that make it better than 4G networks. For instance, “5G brings three new aspects to the table: greater speed (to move more data), lower latency (to be more responsive), and the ability to connect a lot more devices at once (for sensors and smart devices)” (Segan). Faster speeds and less lag time is very appealing to consumers. It makes it easier to communicate, watch videos, and even use GPS. If someone sees a chance to get better cell service, chances are they are going to upgrade. There is no sense having a slower and less reliable network when you can easily upgrade to a better one. 5G is also expected to be involved in upcoming inventions. For example, “The top ideas included a game streaming service; a way to do stroke rehab through VR; smart bandages that track your healing; and a way for parents to interact with babies who are stuck in incubators” (Segan). 5G is going to be appealing to many consumers because how much easier it is going to make everyday tasks. It’s going to be a huge step for health care. Health care is going to become a lot more efficient and advanced with 5G. However, there is one more crucial part in the tipping point of a
