The environmental performance of timber has many advantages as a potential mass construction material. With focus on the environment and carbon emissions, building green has an increased importance in construction and will be ever so important in the future with sustainability at the forefront of any design. Timber products possess a number of environmental characteristics that allow it to be considered a renewable and sustainable product. CO2 is a leading indicator of global warming and when properly managed and harvested, trees remove carbon dioxide from the air by converting this gas into carbohydrates and water providing oxygen as a byproduct (Bland, 2005).
In a report produced by the Australian government, the importance of forests and wood products in relation to Australia's carbon balance was outlined and measures that can be taken to help reduce societies energy use. Australian forests have removed 38.5 billion tonnes or carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, about 70 times the annual net greenhouse gas emissions Australia produces and in 2004 plantation and commercial forests removed a net 43.7 million tonnes of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere (Ximenes, Robinson and Wright, 2004). These figures show that by incorporating the use of wood products into more designs it will result in lower green house gas emissions than most other alternatives.
In comparison to conventional building materials such as reinforced concrete and steel, CLT is manufactured from sustainably managed forests. Production of CLT generally requires less energy to manufacture compared to conventional materials, as the timber grown to manufacture CLT absorb carbon and store it long term (BRE, 2011). In the figure below, gathered from the report by the...

It has been documented that within the panalised building system the main weak link is the junction of wall, floor and wall below. To alleviate the concentrated loads at these points, nails or screws are used to reinforce the bearing point (Popovski, Schneider and Shweinsteiger, 2010, pg5).
The overall strength of the design is also dependant on the duration of loading and the effects it has on the structure. The standards define the duration of load factors for five second, five minutes, five hours, five days, five months and 50+ years, with factors ranging from 1.00 for instantaneous actions such as wind gusts to 0.57 for permanent loads. It can be noted that the long term factor is the result of the significant strength decrease timber experience when subjected to loads for extended periods of time. (HB2.2-2003 p292)

The topic that we have been given for this assessment is a quite broad subject, because of this I am going to be narrowing this down to the ideas that Kurt Hahn and Sir James Darling brought forth to Geelong Grammar School Timbertop and how throughout the history of the Schools Campus the changes that have happened to the Outdoor and Experiential learning side. The thinking behind my decision to reduce the subject down to one single stream was to express my own op
“Be more concerned with you character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are.” These words of John Wooden are just a few out of many wise quotes millions of people, not just athletes, are inspired by today and likely will continue to be inspired by for a very long time. Basketball fans and experts consider John Wooden as one of, if not, the greatest coaches of all time. Much of his success is a result of his beliefs and coaching system. Knowing the background of Coach Wooden’s playing and coaching career plays a significant role in understanding how he practiced his beliefs with his teams and how his philosophy and success intertwined to set a precedent for the remainder of collegiate basketball.

Michael Green is an architect with a passion for designing skyscrapers globally. However, Michael possesses a unique interest in this industry which separates his work from the rest; Michael’s buildings are constructed with wood. Green’s thesis seems to be that wood is mother nature’s fingerprint, no two pieces are the same, and if you build it up properly it can create something so inspiring and beneficial. His talk is directed towards architects around the world, possibly even environmentalists who are exploring more sustainable ways of industrializing. In his TED talk Green successfully backs his thesis up by incorporating his family, examples, statistics, and counterarguments through the use of rhetorical appeals.
Success is not given to you or something you are born with it’s something that is earned through morals and hard work. The simple idea of success comes in many forms and can be interpreted in many of different ways. John Wooden is one of the most renowned basketball coaches in the world. He also had a variety of different accolades to his name. He was the head coach at UCLA for over 20 years where he won ten NCAA national championships in a 12-year period. He also was named national coach of the year six times. He played basketball at Purdue where he was the first to be named All-American three times.

In 1996, Arctic Timber Engineered Woods Division, a highly mature business unit, faced a market downturn and began losing millions of dollars each month. Before becoming the President of the Engineered Woods Division, Bjorn Gustavsson had already determined that the company could not sustain its commodity business and was not aligned with the new direction devised by Peter Hammarskjöld, the CEO of Arctic Timber. According to Gustavsson, in order to prosper in a more challenging market environment, developing a specialty business was the only viable approach. The goal was to shift 50% of its commodity business into undetermined specialty by 2000. However, the Division had shifted only 10% of its business to specialty products by 1997.
Concrete also has its advantages. Concrete does not corrode, therefore concrete structures require less maintenance. Besides that, concrete has resistance to fire, therefore it is safer compare to the timber structure. Concrete has also resistance to cyclic loading.
No one can deny the basic human need for housing. And no one can deny that any advanced culture requires a great deal of paper to transact its daily business. However, one must also recognize the importance of forests in and of themselves. We must fight against deforestation and international community must also introduce stricter policies to stop deforestation. 1) First, we will talk about the effects of deforestation and why it's a problem. 2) Second, we will learn about the many causes of deforestation. 3) Lastly, we will cover how to solve this problem.
Trees also absorb greenhouse gases that cause global warming. The less the forests the more the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, which will increase speed of global warming.
Woodworking, a form of carpentry, has been around for centuries and overtime developed into a more modern art. Today people will mostly see woodwork in homes in the form of furniture and decorations, or even smaller things such as family heirlooms passed down by generations and simple crafts made by younger generations. The skill of woodworking, however, is not inherited but takes practice and years of experience to fully master. Even experienced woodworkers run into challenges sometimes. The key is to overcome that obstacle and find different ways to create something new from a piece of wood. It is interesting to see and go through the process in which a woodworker goes through
centuries. Today with an increasing population the amount of wood available has declined seriously in recent decades. People have been harvesting wood to cultivate land, burn, and for the use of raw materials for industry (Urquhart 2014). The estimated amount of deforestation taking place is twenty million hectares per year (Urquhart 2014). Climate change and global warming are just a few of the problems associated with the degradation of our forests.
The use of green materials is better for the environment because they have a positive impact on the planet. Looking at our environment today we see a place that has been facing a massive climate change. Scientists have been concerned over global warming for decades. The ongoing increase of the earth’s temperature is believed to be caused by the greenhouse effect (“Global Warming” 27). Building with green materials produces significantly lower greenhouse gas emission. Specifically, wood as a material for building products, requires considerably less energy than other building products such as steel and concrete. Wood product manufacture results in fewer greenhouse gas and other air-polluting emissions (“Green Building Benefits”). Green building also results in waste reduction. In the United States, construction and demolition creates a huge amount of solid waste. Green building limits the waste prod...
One of the most evident problems associated to the environment is the issue of the logging of trees, mainly in undisturbed places such as the Amazon basin. Trees are considered the lungs of the Earth. They recycle all the polluting carbon in the air and return oxygen back into our atmosphere, creating a stable cycle of carbon in our atmosphere. However, the impeccable rates which trees are being cut down in our forests have grown to ever increasing and alarming rates. Trees that are made way for farming are burnt up releasing deadly amounts of carbon and thus leading to the problem of global warming. As its names suggest the world is slowly warming up and without any notice the environment which God has gave us will be slowly eradicated. The daily lives which humans carry on about every day are also a factor influencing on our environment and global warming. By driving cars that have a thirst for petrol we are releasing carbon dioxide and furthermore impacting on the world?s climate. In Australia environmental impact has always been evident. Land clearing especially in places such as Queensland has caused land to lay dry and lifeless where all forms of life is destroyed. By clearing land we are not only affecting our climate but are also destroying animal habitat and the usage of the land. Senseless actions by commuters in Australia, emitting tons and tons of lethal gases vulnerable to the atmosphere are starting to take its toll on our climate. We are seeing a harsher climate and at the same time less rain. If we want to preserve our world we must take a stance on this issue and take action for what is right, not carrying on the actions that will lead to a desolate, destroyed Earth.
Buildings consume a variety of materials in their construction. Green design reduces the dependence on resource intensive products and materials. Today, there are an increasing number of products available made from efficient, earth-friendly, or recycled materials. In a green building, consideration is also given to the construction process itself. Materials that minimize waste or can be recycled, help contribute to an efficient and environmentally sensitive construction process.
