Everyone serves a purpose in this world, and Tim Tebow’s purpose is to change the lives of others in a positive way. Tebow grew up the youngest of five children, and was born on August 14, 1987. Later, his parents homeschooled him and taught him about all the Christian beliefs. He later became a starting quarterback for the Florida Gators, and the rest is history. Tim Tebow is a role model through his actions, including starting a charity, writing numerous encouraging books, and his perseverance through sports. Tim was actually born with the disability of dyslexia and has been challenged throughout his whole life. Now he is writing a book about how to persevere and never give up. He tells us, “Don’t focus on your disability. Focus on your abilities. Focus on what you can do. You were created by God in a special way to do special things” (Wright). This is saying we are all unique in our own ways, and there is no wrong way. It’s also saying to be positive and to not think negatively of others. Tebow says, “The way you view your life and the way your brain works are designed in a way to do unique things. You can help others. You can tackle a problem in a different way. You can approach an issue with a different mindset. Be confident in who you are. Celebrate your uniqueness”(Wright). When reading the essay “Living with Dyslexia” by Gareth Cook, we come to an understanding that language may not be as simple to learn for one person as it is for another. After keeping his disorder a secret for more than 15 years, he finally decides to “…come out of the closet” (Pg. 158). Throughout the essay we see the struggles that Gareth is faced with, but we also see the motivation that he has. At the end of the essay he says “Its never going to be easy, but put your heart into it and you will blow them away.” (Pg. 159). This quote is clearly shows the significance of perspective. If you have a positive outlook on a subject, you choose how to handle it. That is exactly what Gareth Cook does. He pushes through the difficulties he has, because he is motivated to learn the power of language. He further explains that you will eventually get to where you want to be, but it just might take a bit longer. He writes to inspire the kids that are too living with dyslexia with hopes to shed some light during difficult and confusing times. Like language, one’s perspective can dramatically alter one’s identity. In previous year, the power of language was feared. Dictators took away the right of language from people like journalists, because they held the real power. They had the power to write about the issues and share them with the rest of the world. Dylan was born with a tumor wrapped around his spinal cord, which was successfully removed however resulted in him becoming paraplegic. The first fourteen years of his life, Dylan defined himself by his disability. He felt ‘weird and different’ because of his disability and this was why he was excluded from his peers. It was not until Grade 9 that Dylan began to see that his disability did not have the power to dictate his life or set a limit to which he could achieve. What truly is amazing is the person Tim Tebow represents off the field. He is a devout Christian who works to spread his religion and give hope to those in need. Tebow has been involved with controversy that started in his days in high school, due to a law in Florida that allowed him to pick his high school. Tebow is possibly the only player to be under national scrutiny from his high school playing days through his career in the NFL both on and off the field. Most of this controversy is because of his faith and how he displayed it on field. The best way to describe him is to say that he is a polarizing person and player in the sense that people either love or hate him. My family and I discovered I had dyslexia when I was in the second grade. Honestly, it was quite a traumatic event. What was an eight year old little girl to think about a doctor telling her “she was retarded” (that she had dyslexia.) I pondered long and hard about the diagnosis, but soon learned to accept it. I made it my goal to overcome my dyslexia. That’s the amazing thing about me and actually one of the few factors that drives me to work harder and not be a dyslexic statistics. I knew was an anomaly. In middle school I was diagnosed with a disability with the way I expressed myself through writing. Ever since, I have gained multiple values and learned several lessons about self confidence. I was taught to push past my limits, in order to be successful in reaching my goals along with my dreams. Today I am a senior in high school who was once thought to struggle, but was able to succeed beyond expectations. To some, a disability may seem like a setback from achieving goals, but to me I used it as a challenge for myself. I have always grown up in a more ‘normal’ setting and seeing people with disabilities was something that was rare to me. When I was younger, my thoughts on people with disabilities were that they could only be physically seen, nothing else (mentally, intellectually, etc.). As I reached middle school, I realized how broad the world is and how many ways people were affected by disabilities. Some of them led a more normal life and some have a harder time adjusting. Just seeing and reading how so many are affected and how harder it is for them really opened up my mind and allowed me to have a wider perception of how broad things are in the world.
