The Lives That Were Destroyed In Tim O’Brien’s “The Things They Carried” first lieutenant Jimmy Cross and his soldiers are faced with shame and guilt of their lives while fighting in war. This story isn’t just about the war, it's about the experiences and the emotions of the soldiers. In “ The Things They Carried ” The soldiers all have some kind of connection to their former lives such as items like Jimmy Cross carried letters which he thinks are love letters from a girl named Martha, Kiowa carried a copy of the New Testament, Ted Lavender carried Tranquilizers, they also carried dignity, shame, fear, guilt throughout the war. His words exactly being “ I was too good for this war. Too smart, too compassionate, to everything. It couldn’t happen. I was above it. A mistake, maybe—a foul up in the paperwork. I was no soldier… I remember the rage in my stomach. Later it burned down to a smoldering self-pity, then to numbness” (41-42). I don’t blame him … If I was in his place I wouldn’t have gone to war. Maybe some people see that as being a coward but I see it as being brave. I don’t think I can ever kill and have it on my conscience. Me and my older brother would always have this argument about being drafted if there was a war, he would ask me questions like “what would you do if you had to go fight in the war when you turn 18?” and I’d tell him “I wouldn’t go” just because it wasn’t what I wanted for me. I am a girl who hates war and conflict. I understand why O’Brien was angry about fighting in the war, in his quote O’Brien said that he was too compassionate. Maybe it meant that he was too soft to others, but for me I would rather be compassionate and have love than be be someone without feeling and have
