Natalie was kept in a hotel and forced into prostitution. Her captor threatened her life to keep her from leaving. She was able to make a call for help and was rescued from her captor. This is one of the lucky human trafficking stories. Many stories do not have Natalie’s happy ending. Throughout history, people have been experiencing the multiple types of human trafficking, yet most people do not understand it.
Human trafficking is not only a part of the world’s past, but its present. When people think of human trafficking, they think of the slavery in our history even though trafficking happens all the time. While some forms of human trafficking are similar to slavery, others are quite different. According to the Human Rights Commission, the most common types of trafficking include debt bondage, sex trafficking, and forced labor. Polaris’ article on human trafficking claims that labor trafficking is the most common form of human trafficking, followed by sex trafficking. These are also the two types of trafficking most people have heard about. The main difference between slavery and trafficking is that trafficking has to involve some sort deception or coercion. Normally, victims are promised of new jobs or cheap education. Once they arrive in a new country the employer will confiscate their passports or abuse them into staying and working under insufficient conditions. It is estimated that 14.2 million people around the world are trapped in forced labor. People affected by this branch of human trafficking work in areas of manufacturing, agriculture, construction, and domestic work. Many victims are kept under poor conditions and are abused. The Human Rights Commission has found that woman and young girls account for almost eighty percent of all trafficking victims, most in the sex trafficking category. That is almost 17,000,000 women. According to Polaris, sex traffickers use threats or debt bondage to force people into committing commercial sex acts. People normally become victims of sex trafficking after running away or being lured with a fake modeling or dancing job. Polaris states that in 2016 the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children estimated that 17% of runaway were likely to be a sex trafficking victim. One million children are sex trafficked every year. This makes up a sub-branch of sex trafficking known as child sex trafficking. Debt bondage is one of the less known types of trafficking. The Human Right Commission says debt bondage is when someone is forced to work in order to pay back a debt. Normally the victims in this category live under poor conditions and are not making very much pay, making their service last longer.
