Adaptive and Global Leadership In today’s business market leaders are face with diversity in there follower and who they do business with on a global scale. It is more and more obvious that products in a store are marked from a plethora of countries not just made in the country of origin from where you are from due to emerging markets. Adaptive leadership is becoming widespread in the United States Army amongst junior officers in leadership positions that require quick thinking and innovation. Leonard Wong discusses how the versatile and unpredictable enemy and situations in Iraq produces adaptable junior officers. These officers are learning to make decisions under chaotic conditions and are becoming more mentally agile. The Army is changing. The Army is transforming its capabilities in the war in Iraq to be effective and successful. General Schoomaker states that we will not accomplish our goals as a nation in the 21st century unless our Army becomes much more agile but with the capacity for long term, sustained level of conflict. The Army is in the process of eliminating its old ways of war, it has to become somewhat of a decathlete. Trained for multiple events across a broad spectrum not just one event like a track athlete.
In order for a leader to be a leader he/she must begin with the assumption that you are the one who matters most. As a leader you have to possess that level of confidence in yourself that you are capable of leading yourself “before you can lead others”. And when you develop this belief then you are better able of affirmative influence “on others”.
Scott Szwast’s speech entitled, “Scott Szwast: The global business next door” was an informative look into international trade in America and the effects thereof to a business’s growth potential. Szwast used this speech to dispel the idea held by many American’s, which is that global trade is a market for large corporations. According to Szwast, many business owners don’t take advantage of the business opportunities across the world because of “self-imposed borders”, which are doubt, uncertainty, and fear.
Transformational Leadership and Adaptive Leadership theory will be discussed in relation to IT governance. De Haes, Van Grembergen and Debreceny (2013) formulate the main ideas of IT governance have only been around 20 years, but, the amount of literature is copious and is still providing a prolific amounts of current documentation. Both Transformational Leadership and Adaptive Leadership represent appropriate and critical leadership styles for organizations that strive to keep the pace of continuous technological advancements and that are focused on the rapid adoption of new business concepts and process improvements (Xenikou & Simosi, 2006). The specific benefits and problems associated with each leadership style have organizational opportunities and difficulties. The timing of each leadership style when applied requires timing and cooperation. Yet they both have similar operational goals, to improve the processes of IT governance using the innate strengths of each leadership style for the betterment of the organization. Knowing the strengths of each leadership style facilitate implementation, mastering the pitfalls of each leadership style improves metacognitive understanding of the risks and weaknesses involved in the process.

In Theodore Levitt’s article “The Globalization of Markets”, he states that a well managed corporation focuses on selling standardized products with high quality and low priced instead of focuses on selling on customized products with high cost. Levitt defines the differences between multinational corporation and global corporation, and adopts many specific examples to proves his view. He defines the multinational corporation who operates in many countries and adjust its product based on the taste of specific region. This will result in a high cost to produce the product because company have to input more resource into each individual product. However, global corporation sells similar product worldwide at relative low cost. According to Levitt, the cultural differences are becoming more and more “homogenized”; therefore, becoming a global corporation will lead to the successful of the company in the global market.
Investing or venturing into the international market involves critical analysis of the internal and external environment in which the company operates. Usually, a company will decide to venture internationally due to a saturated market or fierce competition in the current country of operation. The demand for a company’s products may have diminished as a result of an economic crisis thus the company will target a foreign market to sustain its sales. In other words, the firms expand internationally to seek new customers for its products. For example, the current Euro zone crisis led to low demand in Europe and many companies extended their businesses to emerging markets where demand was high. Our economic development will forever be defined as our ability to succeed internationally. PwC forecasts India’s real annual GDP growth until 2050 at 8.9 percent, Vietnam’s at 8.8 percent, and China’s at 5.9 percent. The list of fast-growing emerging markets goes on and on. The U.S. forecast is a meager 2.4 percent, comparable with most Western economies. The domestic companies that are likely to see incremental growth in the coming decades are those that are not only doing business internationally, but that are developing the strategic skill set to master doing business across cultures. Cross-cultural core competence is at the crux of today’s sustainable competitive advantage. For example, political environment will tell us, as to how and why political leaders control, whether and how of international business. Legal environment, both national and international will tell us about many kinds of laws by which business firms must work. The cultural environment will tell us about attitudes, beliefs and opinions important to business people. Economic environment will tell us about the economic system being followed by the host country, which may or may not be different from home country. It will also explain the variables such as level of development, human resources, Gross Domestic Per Capita and consumption patterns that determine a firm’s ability to do business. Geography will tell us about location, quantity, and quality of the world’s resources.
Leadership is defined as a process by which an individual influences others to obtain goals. There are three aspects that should be addressed when explaining leadership. One aspect is that leadership is a social influence process; leadership could not exist without a leader and one or more followers. Another leadership aspect is compliance; all of the leader’s directions must be complied with voluntarily. Compliance is what separates leadership from other influence-based formal authority. Finally, leadership results in the followers’ behavior, that is purposeful and goal-directed which must be in some organized setting (Leadership Theories and Studies, 2009).

Adaptability: I find adaptability to be one of my talent. I am able to adapt to any given situation or environment faster than my peers. This is mainly due to the fact that all throughout my life, my family and I have been moving: Nigeria, Ghana, US, and currently Belgium by myself. This led me, at a young age, to learn to quickly adapt to my surroundings in order to continue on with my life or else I would be stuck in a situation with no escape.
