Rising Above the Struggle In 2011, New York city police stopped people 685,724 times on the street. These people were innocent pedestrians stopped because of judgement from the police. This clearly disrespects the rules of the United States and prevents opportunities. For the ones willing to take it, this country offers a Myriad opportunities. Although there were some advocates for the independence of this country as the Bill of Rights was being created, there weren’t many. In the Article “Common Sense,” Thomas Paine says “I challenge the warmest advocate for reconciliation to show a single advantage that this continent can reap by being connected with Great Britain.” Thomas Paine challenges the people of the United States to see the opportunity to be free from Great Britain as change for the better. The United States is still a land of opportunity, but it is the people who are giving up these rights because they have forgotten the struggle that took place. The struggle to find peace and balance in this country as a whole, and for its people. It is the everyday activities that need to be reinforced with more respect towards the people who fought for the privileges we have now. The citizens of the U.S. need to start expanding their knowledge of the history, and the effort that has been made to make this a country of freedom and opportunity for all. From the Quartering act to the safety in the streets now, the U.S has come a long way, but there are still aggressive acts of offensive behavior between citizens. It is the citizen’s right to be in their homes safely knowing that they will not be invaded or disturbed. It is also the other citizens responsibility to know that disturbing/ attacking another person is disrespecting the rules this country was built on.
