The novel The Third Twin by CJ Omololu follows the insecurities of Lexi Rios, who is an overachiever with an identical twin sister who always seems to outdo her every move. To mask her insecurities, Lexi uses the fake identity of Alicia, who is the make believe sister that she created with her twin when they were little. However, Lexi is forced to get rid of this identity when Alicia is accused of a murder that is completely out of her hands. This novel relates to the philosophy of Man vs. Self by bringing up questions about the deep rooted insecurities that live within all of us. The first instance in which Lexi’s lack of self worth becomes clear is in the beginning of the book. Here, she addresses that needs disguise herself as Alicia before she can go out on a date. She believes that if she went out as herself, who is very conscious of her schoolwork and grades, nobody would want to be around her. This false belief that people will not accept her goes deep beneath the surface, and it is revealed that Lexi spends a lot of time comparing herself to her twin sister. All of her life Lexi has never felt confident about her abilities, but the one shred of confidence she kept was with her grades. Her main goal in life was to get into Stanford, because she felt that if she got in her family would finally be proud of her. However, Lexi was crushed when she did not end up making it into the school, causing her to lose her sense of confidence and individuality. This only adds to the existing questions of what is expected out of teenagers all around the world. Why are grades and school turned into a defining factor of a person?
