Loss can be a heartbreaking experience or just an inconvenience. It is significant in both books because of what the characters loss or what the characters loose. Whether it is a family member or an object, all the losses have some significance to the war or symbolism. In the novel, the book thief Liesel loses her mother. “ There was a chaos of goodbye”(Zusak 25). “The sudden realization that this would all be for nothing - that her mother would never write back and she would never see her again.” (Zusak 99). These two quotes explain Liesel's loss of her mother. When Liesel joined her new family and she never got a letter back, she realized that her old life is behind her and she can never go back to her mother. This is showing how roger is losing his identity as a civilized human and becoming a savage. This quote also foreshadows the foreseeable future for roger as a savage. “ Their lost concept of society is expressed by the varying ideologies of each boys attitude to authority. For example, as the boys realize that they might be on the island for some time the loose faith in being rescued and star resisting the authority of Ralph. Because both books are based on a time a war, fear is an emotion felt by everyone in both books, it can effect, how you act and how you think. In the book thief, Max's life is ruled by fear. Fear of being found, fear of being the reason the Huberman's get caught, and the fear of being. “All my life I've been scared of men standing over me.” This quote is explaining how max has felt all his life. In the short story the standover man, max is trying to convey the message that he does not want to be watched all his life. He is scared of the fact that people are superior to him, like the nazis. But for no reason. He does not want to live in fear. wHat max wants is to be treated equally to any race or religion. Liesel biggest fear is losing more friends and family. When max retains an illness, she begins gathering objects in desperation to for max to revive. A toy soldier is one of the gifts given to Max. “It was scratched and trodden, which, to Liesel, was the whole point. Even with the injury, it could still stand up” (Zusak 323). This quote is demonstrating that even though Max is burdened with this hatred upon him and his illness he is still abled to persevere through.
