Can one person make a difference?
I believe every difference in the world is made up of one thing...courage. It takes one of courage to be able to confidently put themselves out there and bring forth their own ideas. Striving to be in conformity with society has become the norm. It is very rare to see someone who willingly acts a certain way to be alienated from society, but because of these rare occasions many historical differences have changed the world. Someone with courage does not care about the consequences when trying to prove a point. Therefore, being courageous is essential to making a difference in the world because it is easier to give up than continue, but I believe everyone has this courage to continue and make a difference.

Quang Duc was a Mahayana Buddhist who burned himself alive due to the victimization of his fellow Mahayana people by the Southern Vietnam government. Though you do not by any means have to kill yourself to be courageous, Quang Duc faced many negative consequences for his idea of Buddhism equality in Vietnam which made him so courageous. Quang Duc along with many other Mahayana Buddhist were being persecuted simply because their spiritual beliefs were a more mythological view of what Buddhism was. His self-immolation caught the attention of many. American President John F. Kennedy was emotionally affected by the story of Quang Duc and caused the Vietnamese president at the time Ngo Dinh Diem to declare an end to the persecution of his people. Quang Duc’s courageous act of change put a stop to religious oppression in Vietnam. If he did not have courage Mahayana Buddhist would continue to be mistreated by the Southern government in Vietnam. Mahayana Buddhist can live peacefully now because of Thich Quang
Everyone is born with some form of courage. The question is, in their lifetime, will they choose to use it and grow from it? People can be courageous in many different situations and through multiple types of courage. In To Kill A Mockingbird, the author, Harper Lee, values standing up for what is right as being the most important category of courage. Harper Lee displays acts of courage through the characters when Atticus defends Tom Robinson, Scout and Jem choose not to show their anger through violence, and town’s people stand up for Tom and Atticus; thus showing that the author believes that standing up for what is right is the most valuable attribute of courage.
Courage is all around the world even if it’s not known worldwide. As for in Madeleine L’Engle ‘A Wrinkle in Time’ courage is considered to be exceptionally major as it raises awareness to trust in the people close to you. Everyone doubts themselves at a point in their life but overcoming that unresolved issue with yourself is important, sometimes just staying true to yourself is the best thing you can do. Just as Meg held on to her father and believed with all her heart that he’s still out there and will come back to their family even as all hope seems lost. That indicated Meg being a strong hearted person. Meg was courageous when she trusted her friends even when most of the situation was turning against their favors. This action and many more that she did made us believe that courage is not just a term, it’s a 7 letter word filled with hope and love, telling us to never give up. As Meg considered backing off from the chaos but the love she has for her beloved brother Charles Wallace snaps her back to reality resulting her to find the
Courage is when you are stepping up when no one else will to fight what you believe in.
Rosa Parks was on a bus. She was minding her own business when there was a white person on and did not have a seat. She was choicen to give up her seat but she didn´t she was courageous. On Source 1 it said that, " If an African American passenger was sitting in the row, he or she was expected to give up the seat and stand. This is what Rosa Parks was told to do-and she refused.¨ That is why I say that Rosa Parks is courageous. The next paragraph is going to be about other people that you see everyday are
Although bias, discrimination and prejudice have been slowly hardwired into our brains over the years – people still hold the ability to change how the world thinks, three key individuals challenged the status quo (Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King and Desmond Tutu) forever changing our perspectives on the world.
Everyone can change the world and become an important part of history. Those who think they can change the world are often the ones who do. Civil Rights activists Martin Luther King Jr., and Human rights activist and American Muslim, Malcolm X are two great examples of people who thought they could make a difference in the world, and eventually did. The two both wanted to change things, but in two different ways. Martin Luther King used peaceful protests to accomplish his goal. Malcolm X used violence and rebellions to get his ideals across. The two wanted to advocate that black lives are as important as white lives. Malcolm promoted black supremacy and the separation of blacks and whites. Unlike Malcolm X, King had different views on the matter, and wanted the integration of the two races. Furthermore, he had a vision of unison rather than segregation. Despite
Standing for what you believe in, knowing what you are risking, makes you have courage and bravery. It is important to stand for what you believe because people need to hear what you need to say or see the change you want to make.
Like people in the real world they all have different perspectives of courage. Courage is not an easy quality to have. It takes a lot of bravery to have courage at all appropriate times. “True courage is not just showing it at chosen times but at all needed times no matter the situation.” This quote means that to really have courage you can not just show it when you want to. To have courage you have to be able to see a good outcome before it happens, you have to always keep a positive attitude even when it may be hard. courage is like a lot of things in life, people want to have it and want to be able to say they have it but aren’t willing to do what they need to do in order to have it. There are some people who do have what it takes to have courage and we should try to be more like
The Chinese monk Daodu’s had a strong fascination with the Lotus Sutra chapter regarding the “Medicine King”, or the Bodhisattva Mahâsattva Sarvasattvapriyadarsana. The chapter focuses on the Medicine King lighting himself ablaze “with the object to pay worship to the Tathâgata and this Dharmaparyâya of the Lotus of the True Law” (Kern, 1884, p. 171). The Bodhisattva’s act was described in the chapter as “the sublimest gift”, which was superior to renouncing royalty or worshipping the Tathâgata. Daodu is believed to have taken inspiration from this chapter for his self-immolation, expressing that his body is similar to a “poisonous plant”; his wish to help the world by sacrificing his body refers back to the concept of compassion, but another reason is to display true devotion to the Tathâgata. The Lotus Sutra’s interpretation of setting oneself on fire is seen as the true act of worship, from which one is rewarded with enlightenment. Thích Quảng Đức used the act of self-immolation as well to alleviate the suffering of others in the form of political protest. Đức used self-immolation in order to increase awareness to the religious persecution in Vietnam, imposed by then-President Ngô Đình Diệm; his act was noticed internationally and was a catalyst for religious freedom in Vietnam (Kelly, 2011, p.
“Courage - a perfect sensibility of the measure of danger, and a mental willingness to endure it.” Courageous people understand the danger that they face when they act how they do. That is what courage is all about. Many historical events occur due to people having the courage to do what they think is right, or because of those who use their courage to do what they want. Having the courage to stand alone in one’s beliefs may be one of the hardest thing a person can do.
It takes a lot of courage to face society with what they view as wrong. People judge a book by its cover without even questioning it. For example, many people did not believe in what Martin Lurther King had to say. But he believed in himself and said in his powerful speech “ I have a dream.” Martin believed in what he could accomplish and became his own leader with the help of a few. Contrasting, when Rosa Parks stood up for the people with her skin color by refusing to give up her seat to a white man in a city bus in 1955. Both Rosa Parks and Martin Lurther King led civil rights movement in the United States. Both historical figures had the
It is perseverance. Without it, we wouldn´t have freedom or bravery. Perseverance is doing something in a humble manner and doing it to the best of your ability. Essentially perseverance is what helped us separate from Britain and fight for the land in the West Coast. We all have to persevere to get through our lives because there will always be someone better than you and there will always be someone worse than you. You can´t be satisfied to just be ¨OK¨ you have to persevere to be better than what you think you are capable of. If we don't push ourselves to be better then we won't move forward in life and we will remain the same for years and years to come. Nowadays we are getting lazier and lazier to the point where we do not want to try new things. We are getting too comfortable with just being ¨OK¨ and contempt with being mediocre. If everyone tried a little bit harder at life and tried to make the world a little bit of a better place then everything would be better. To me America has tried its best at helping other nations with supplies or at war. America has inspired to persevere in everything I do and to do the best I can at
If we do not stand up for what we believe in, then what will we stand up for? If we let things go unchanged and did not have important individuals stand up for what is right, then where would we be now? If we sat back and let bad things happen to good people, what would that make us? We would be living in a world that no one wants to live in. One full of cruelty, hatred, and ignorance. In order for the world to become a better place individuals have to take a stand. The affect the individuals I am going to tell you about are immensely important to the lives we have today.
Courage can also come from a more emotional place. There are a number of examples of how a person could exhibit this type of courage including following their dreams despite the risks that doing so involves financially or emotionally. This is the type of courage that can be attributed to pioneering entrepreneurs like Walt Disney and Steve Jobs. Similarly, courage can be show when someone stands up for what they believe is right. This includes speaking out against injustice and some of the well known people to have shown this type of courage would include the likes of Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela. It takes courage to speak your mind, especially if your opinion is in the minority. Finally, we could also say that courage comes from being brave enough to step out of your comfort zone and explore new horizons. Without the courage of explorers and adventures there would be a great many things that we would not have discovered about the world in which we live. Take Christopher Columbus who was among the first explores to challenge the concept that the world was flat. Where would we be now if he had been to afraid to sail towards the horizon just in case he was wrong? It took great courage for him to leave his familiar world and set of in search of new places that he couldn’t even be sure really
The world we are living in today is slowly falling apart. The tragedy of many people in the Islamic States, Ferguson riot, Boston Marathon Terror Attack, and much more. I truly believe if we get rid of discrimination, racism, hatred between different religions the world will be a much better place. It is not too late for us to clean up our mistakes. We can start changing this world by promoting diversity in education. Diversity not only help students does better school, it is also a way we can promote peace and love among nations. Millions of refugees are suffering trying to escape their home because of their differences. People believe that they are different from others but at the end of the day we are all human who are just trying to survive. Why can’t we treat everyone around us equally despite their differences. We can change the world with our future generations. “It is time for parents to teach young people early on that in diversity there is beauty and there is strength.” - Maya
