The novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest by Ken Kesey showed the interpretations of Dr. Spivey and Nurse Ratched regarding the Therapeutic Community. Dr. Spivey a doctor at the hospital who is inferior to Nurse Ratched asserts himself with the patients. Nurse Ratched the head nurse sees the Therapeutic Community in a different light and seems to be against the patient's. The theory of the Therapeutic Community is that a man has to learn to get along in a group before he can get along in society. Dr. Spivey’s interpretation of the Therapeutic Community is a source of assistance to help patients get better. His belief is that during the meetings all patients must remain seated so order can be maintained. As Dr. Spivey tries to discuss his theory she puts an end to it because she is focused on trying to find dirt on each patient. Nurse Ratched uses the Therapeutic Community as a scapegoat to find ways to torture and manipulate the patients. In the meeting she asks the patients if they have done anything that they kept secret, which leads to them opening up and confessing many secrets. After each confession it was clear that she was pleased because she kept saying “Yes, yes, yes.” Dr. Spivey’s and Nurse Ratched’s interpretations of the Therapeutic Community are different. Dr. Spivey is portrayed as the doctor looking to help better the patients, unlike Nurse Ratched who looks to find fault and ensure that they cannot function in society. Although the Therapeutic Community’s goal should be to help the patients to function in groups, Nurse Ratched is opposing it. Dr. Spivey sees the patients as actual people who can be helped if needed and Nurse Ratched sees them not as humans but as pawns to get what she
