Have you ever heard the name Theodore Roethke? Theodore is an American poet, who has influenced a great many people. He wrote several notable poems such as "The Waking," or "In a Dark Time." In this essay, I will discuss Theodore's life and influence, his teaching, and his poetry. Now, I shall talk on Theodore's life.
First, I shall talk about Theodore's life and his influence on the lives of others. Theodore was born in Saginaw, [Michigan,] on May 25, 1908 (SIRS). Theodore's childhood was quite troubled. Theodore's father was a drunk, and he did little of the fathering that he should have done. Theodore quite often feared that he would turn into his father, and eventually that fear consumed him, and he became his father (Dormaier). Theodore was a small, sickly, sensitive child as well (UW) When Theodore had grown up, and went to college, he drank to fit in with a group of friends who thought that "Brains were sissies," This put more and more internal pressure on Theodore, as he was quite sensitive, but had no one to talk with about his emotions (Poetry Foundation)....
Starting at a very early age, Theodore suffered from a severe case of asthma and had horrible eyesight throughout his whole life. He did a lot of physical activity and developed a very strong physique. Despite physical barriers, Theodore had a very strong outlook on life and was very strong physically and mentally. Theodore was also very intelligent and attended Harvard College and Columbia Law School. In 1881, Theodore was elected as a Republican of the New York State Assembly.
Theodore was upright, conservative, and a model of self-control. He didn't care for public acclaim. Theodore Roosevelt JR. was born on October 27, 1858, in New York to Theodore Roosevelt SR. and Martha Bulloch Roosevelt. Theodore Roosevelt JR. was a very sick boy, he suffered from asthmatic attacks which caused the frightening sensation of drowning (Grondahl 2015 7-8). These sensations and attacks caused Theodore a lot of obstacles in his childhood. By attending Harvard College in 1875 when he was just seventeen years old, Theodore was able to push past all his setbacks from his childhood (Grondahl 2015 37). Theodore Roosevelt was one of our greatest presidents. He created the FDA and improved the position of the presidency greatly. Before Theodore came to be president, the position of presidency was slow and wasn’t very interesting so he made the executive branch more powerful by starting new reforms and a strong foreign policy. The life of a president is hard. It is full of stress, responsibilities, and a strong dedication the welfare of your country. Theodore had to deal with all of these presidential stresses, taking up much of his time. In the book Theodore Roosevelt by Louis Auchincloss, I learned a great deal about the twenty-sixth President of the United States of America. Former President T. Roosevelt made many accomplishments as president, and did not have a high number of scandals. Roosevelt did very well in keeping the peace between the different countries, which earned him many admirers and the coveted Nobel Peace Prize. Theodore Roosevelt childhood, Theodore Roosevelt childhood was really good but his health was not at all the best. Theodore Roosevelt was home schooled he has a private teacher because he did not have the energy to attend school. The reason he didn't have the energy to attend school was that he had really bad asthma. Some nights his dad would stay up at night making sure he was still breathing at night while he was asleep.
Theodore Roethke analyzes the complex attitude in an "Elegy for Jane." In the beginning the tone was reminiscent, heartfelt and warm bringing up cherishing moments between the speaker and Jane. However, the tone shifted as the piece developed going from a warm heartfelt poem to a dark sorrowing work. Roethke accomplishes this transition by using dominant literary devices throughout the work such as personification, similes, and imagery. These devices help us understand that the teacher loves and cares for Jane but is fearful of letting her go.

Theodore Roethke's history is significant to the tone and subject matter of his poetry. A poet of the Midwest, he combines a love of the land with his vision of the development of the individual. Roethke is often described as a confessional poet because of his use of modernist techniques to explore his psychology and life (Dunn). Many of his most successful poems are lyrical memories of his childhood. "My Papa's Waltz," is one such account. Theodore's father owned and operated greenhouses, and Theodore spent a great deal of time there in his youth. Many of his memories of these times became the subject of his writings. Ted was shy and said to be sociably awkward, but during high school he developed into good looking guy and was liked by many.
When discussing the different aspects of New Criticism in Dylan Thomas’s poem “Do Not Go Gentle into The Good Night”, the impression that comes to mind is death. The use of imagery was a necessity for Dylan Thomas to express the different techniques of writing which involved a mixture of surrealistic and metaphysical tones. His ability to change a words meaning to incorporate symbolism is noticeable in circle of unity from life to death and renewed life.
